An unpleasant smell in a room can make you feel uneasy and prevent you from fully enjoying the comfort of your living space. The key to removing odors is to first eliminate the source of the bad smell by cleaning thoroughly. The next step is to eliminate any remaining scents and choose a room freshener you love to help restore freshness.
Steps
Eliminate the Source of the Odor

Collect and wash dirty clothes. Clothes left scattered on the floor can develop a musty smell and make the entire room smell bad. Worse, wet clothes can become a breeding ground for mold. Gather all the dirty clothes from around the house, sort them into batches, and toss them in the washing machine.
- To ensure mold and other bacteria are killed, wash clothes on a hot water setting.
- Dry clothes using a tumble dryer or hang them outside if the weather permits.
- Be sure to check the care labels on clothing before washing or drying.

Wash Bed Linens. A third of our lives is spent on the bed, so it's no surprise that your bed sheets, blankets, and pillowcases may start to smell after a while without washing. To deal with this, strip the bed of all pillowcases, bed sheets, and any washable fabric items, and put them in the laundry.
- Once washed, you can either tumble dry them or hang them to dry outside.

Clean the Drain Holes. Kitchen and bathroom sinks can harbor mold, debris, or other items that cause unpleasant odors in your home. To clean the drain, pour 1 cup (220 g) of baking soda down the drain, followed by 2 cups (480 ml) of white vinegar. Wait for the mixture to bubble up and fizz for about 30 minutes.
- Once the baking soda and vinegar have fizzed and gone down the drain, flush the drain with a kettle of boiling water.

Scrub the Toilet. The toilet can also be a breeding ground for mold, bacteria, and other odor-causing agents. Pour 1 cup (240 ml) of vinegar into the toilet bowl. Spray vinegar on the outside and on the toilet seat, and let it soak for about 5 minutes. Scrub the inside of the bowl with a dedicated toilet brush. Wipe the outside and seat of the toilet with a cloth or paper towel.
- Flush the toilet to rinse away any grime loosened during scrubbing.

Remove Mold from Hard Surfaces. Mold, with its distinctive smell, can spread throughout the house. Tackling mold in the bathroom, tiles, sinks, or other damp areas is crucial for both your health and the air quality in your home. You can follow these steps to treat the mold:
- Mix 1 cup (240 ml) of bleach with 4 liters of water in a bucket
- Wear rubber gloves
- Open windows to improve airflow
- Dip a stiff brush into the cleaning solution
- Scrub the areas affected by mold
- Occasionally dip the brush into the solution while scrubbing
- Rinse all surfaces with a damp sponge

Vacuum Floors and Upholstered Furniture. Dirty carpets and furniture can accumulate odors, causing your home to smell unpleasant. To clean dust and dirt that contribute to the smell, vacuum all carpets in the house using a wide attachment. Remove dust and moldy smells from upholstery by vacuuming all upholstered furniture with the appropriate attachment for fabric upholstery.
- For the best results, it's recommended to use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter, as it helps prevent dust and fine particles from being released back into the air.

Take the Trash Outside. Trash is one of the worst culprits for causing bad smells in a room, especially kitchen trash with food scraps and other wet waste. When your kitchen starts to smell, begin by tying up the trash bag and taking it outside.

Clean the Trash Bin. Before putting in a new trash bag, it's essential to clean the bin to remove any stains and debris that might leave behind odors. Follow these steps to clean the trash bin:
- Wear rubber gloves
- Clear out any leftover food debris
- Rinse the trash bin in the bathtub or take it outside to wash with a garden hose
- Wipe the inside of the bin with a cloth or paper towels
- Spray a generous amount of all-purpose cleaner and disinfectant inside the bin
- Let the cleaner sit for 5 minutes
- Scrub the bin with a stiff brush
- Rinse the trash bin thoroughly
- Dry the bin with a cloth or paper towels
- Insert a new trash bag into the bin

Clean Kitchen Appliances That Handle Food. Any household appliance that comes into contact with food can be a source of bad odors in the home, especially if food has recently spilled. If you're unsure where the smell is coming from, clean these food-related appliances:

Give Your Dog a Bath. No matter how much you love your dog, you have to admit that it brings odors into the house. To get rid of this odor source, bathe your dog in a dog tub with dog shampoo, take them to a pet grooming service, or go to a pet wash station at a pet store.
- Throw your dog's bed in the washing machine to clean it and eliminate odors.
Eliminate Odors

Open the window. Bringing fresh air into your home is one of the best ways to eliminate unpleasant odors, as the stale air can flow out through an open window and be replaced by clean air. During spring, summer, and autumn, you can open windows all around the house. To create a cross breeze, open windows on opposite sides of the house.
- In winter, when it’s not possible to keep windows open, you can still open one window for a few minutes to let in fresh air.

Use a fan to improve air circulation and bring in fresh airflow. Fans are highly effective at refreshing the air. When the windows are open, turn on the ceiling and standing fans inside the house to get the air moving and create a stronger breeze.

Let sunlight into your home. Sunlight contains ultraviolet rays, which help to kill things like mold and bacteria that cause bad odors. No matter the season, you should open the curtains and blinds on sunny days to let the UV rays shine into your house.
- Sunlight can effectively eliminate odors from carpets, furniture, pet areas, cushions, mattresses, and other items that may have lingering smells.

Use baking soda. Baking soda is a widely used and inexpensive odor eliminator. To absorb odors in the house, pour baking soda into small dishes and place them around the home. The baking soda will absorb odors and help eliminate unpleasant smells.
- To neutralize odors from household items, sprinkle baking soda on things like carpets, furniture, mattresses, and other odor sources. Let the baking soda absorb the smells for about 30 minutes, then vacuum it up.

Try using vinegar to neutralize odors. Vinegar is another effective odor neutralizer that can help with bad smells in the house. Pour vinegar into small bowls and place them in areas with strong odors, such as:
- Musty basements
- Bathrooms
- Kitchen
- Bedroom

Activated charcoal is an excellent odor absorber and can be used in various rooms and inside household appliances to eliminate unpleasant smells. Make sure to use pure charcoal, not the kind containing lighter fluid. Place several small pieces of charcoal in a dish and scatter them around the house. You can position them in areas such as:
- Wardrobe
- Fridge and freezer
- Living areas

Some indoor plants are known for their air-purifying properties and can also help neutralize odors inside your home. These are some of the plants that can cleanse the air and reduce odors:
- Snake plant

Fragrance sheets used for freshening clothes can also help freshen the air in your home. To use these, simply place a few sheets near odor sources such as:
- Shoe cabinet
- Trash can
- Damp basement
- Mold-prone areas

Boiling a fragrant water mixture can fill your home with a lovely scent as steam spreads throughout the space. To create this natural air freshener, add herbs, spices, and citrus peels to a pot of water and simmer it on the stove for several hours. Ingredients you can use include:
- Lemon peel
- Cinnamon
- Allspice
- Sweet basil
- Ginger
- Cranberries
- Orange peel
- Cloves

Commercial air fresheners are designed to improve the scent and cleanliness of indoor air. These products typically contain chemicals that neutralize odors, along with fragrances to enhance the atmosphere. Commercial air fresheners come in various forms, including:
- Spray bottles
- Diffusers
- Gels
- Waxes

Incense comes in a variety of scents and forms. To use incense, insert the stick into an incense holder and light the tip. Once the incense starts burning, blow out the flame. The incense will emit smoke, filling the room with a fragrant aroma.
- To help the scent spread throughout the room, position a fan opposite the incense. This will help disperse the smoke without causing ash to scatter.
- Always monitor incense while it's burning as it generates heat and could potentially catch fire.
