If your car has an unpleasant odor, sitting inside can be an uncomfortable experience for both you and your passengers. There are various things you can do to improve the smell, starting with keeping your car clean and identifying the source of the bad odor. Begin with the easier fixes, and then tackle the more difficult-to-pinpoint smells.

Replace the cabin air filter if applicable. This can make a significant difference. Refer to the owner's manual for guidance.

If you've tried all other cleaning methods and the odor persists, you can use an ozone generator to perform an ozone shock treatment inside the car. This method can effectively eliminate bacteria, mold, and odorous volatile organic compounds. You can read the article 'How to Apply Ozone Shock Therapy in Your Car' for more details.
Seek professional help if the odor remains stubborn, even after trying everything.
From now on, immediately clean up any spilled drinks.

Advice
- While there are no exact statistics, overusing an ozone generator may damage car interior parts (such as rubber seals). A device with a power output of 3500 to 6000mg/h is typically safe for use for up to 2 hours. Higher-powered devices should be used for shorter periods. Repeat the process multiple times, ensuring to ventilate the car between sessions for safety, rather than conducting a prolonged treatment all at once.
- Avoid using Oust in large quantities, as it can accumulate in the ventilation system and leave an unpleasant smell when you turn on the air conditioner/heater/fan the next day. Use Lysol (a classic product) to eliminate that odor. A product called Ozium is also very effective and has a very mild scent. You can find it in auto parts stores.
- If you have difficulty locating the air intake, turn off the engine and leave the key in the “Run” position. Make sure the air conditioning fan is still working. Go to the front of the car, typically on the passenger side, to listen for the sound of air blowing and the fan running. Turn off the car after spraying and treat both the air conditioning and heating systems, close the hood, and leave it like that for a few hours. This will allow the deodorizer to work its magic.
- Place a fabric softener sheet under the passenger seat. The pleasant fragrance will quickly fill the car. Once the scent fades, bring the softener into the laundry room and buy another sheet to place in the car!
- Cut a half onion in half and place it under the seat. The odor will disappear!
Warning
- Caution: Many air conditioning/heating systems operate with vacuum, and vacuum is only created when the engine is running. There is always a danger when working under the hood while the engine is on. Never attempt this with children nearby. If you feel uncertain, take the car to a mechanic or auto repair shop to have it done. They will charge very little (if any) for a few spray treatments.
- Ozone generators can be harmful if used incorrectly. Always read the instruction manual before using the ozone generator. It is extremely important that no people or animals are inside the car when using the ozone shock treatment.
