This article will walk you through the process of enabling subtitles on YouTube videos, whether you're using a computer, smartphone, or tablet. Some videos on YouTube offer official subtitles, community-created subtitles, auto-translated captions, or notes. You can activate either official subtitles or auto-translated captions in English or other languages on many videos.
Steps
Using a Browser on a Computer

Open YouTube in your browser. Type or paste https://www.youtube.com in the address bar and press the ↵ Enter or ⏎ Return key on your keyboard.

Click on the thumbnail of a video. You can open any video from the homepage, a channel, or from the Search bar at the top of the page.
- This action will open the video in a new page.
- Not all videos have subtitles.
Click on the CC icon at the bottom right corner.
- Click the button again to turn off the subtitles.
- The current subtitle language will be displayed at the top left corner of the video.
- If you don't see the subtitle button in this position, the video might not have subtitles or captions.
- Alternatively, you can press the C key on the keyboard to toggle subtitles.

Click on the Subtitles/CC option in the Settings window. This will open a list of all the available subtitle languages for the video.

Select a language. Click on the subtitle language you want in the pop-up window. The video subtitles will automatically switch to the selected language.
- For some videos, you can choose Auto-translate and pick a language. This will use YouTube's automatic translation service to generate subtitles in the selected language.
- If desired, you can click on Options in the top-right corner of the "Subtitles/CC" window and customize the font style, color, size, and formatting of the subtitles.
Use the mobile app on your device
Open the YouTube app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

Tap on the video you wish to watch. This action will open the selected video in a new page.

Tap the three-dot icon ⋮ in the top-right corner. This will open a pop-up menu with options for the video.
- If you don’t see any buttons on the video, tap the video lightly to make the controls appear.

Tap on the Captions option in the menu. This option is located next to the "CC" icon in the pop-up menu. Tapping it will show a list of all available subtitles for the video.
