In Pokémon GO, Pokémon can only evolve once you have collected the required amount of candies for that Pokémon. For example, you need 50 Pikachu candies to evolve Pikachu. You can earn more Pikachu candies by catching more Pikachu and transferring them to Professor Willow. It's best to evolve your Pokémon as soon as possible, as they become stronger after evolution.
Steps
Collect enough candies to evolve a Pokémon
Check if you have enough candies to evolve a Pokémon. Every time you catch a Pokémon, like Pikachu, you receive both Pikachu candies and stardust. You need a specific number of candies, such as Pikachu candies to evolve a Pikachu (and Spearow candies to evolve a Spearow, etc.)
Launch the app. Tap the Pokéball (Pokémon ball) located at the center of the bottom of the screen. A blue menu will pop up.
Tap on Pokémon at the button on the left side of the screen.
Review the list of Pokémon you've just captured. Tap on one of them (such as a Pikachu).
Check the Pokémon's profile. On Pikachu's page, you'll see an image of Pikachu, its HP (hit points), type, weight, and height. You'll also find stardust and a number next to the orange 'Pikachu Candies.' This number shows how many Pikachu candies you currently have.
Look at the bar labeled “Power Up.” Below it is another bar labeled “Evolve,” just under the number of candies you have. This is the button you need to press to evolve the Pokémon if you have enough candies.
- If you have enough candies, tap “Evolve.”
- If you don't have enough, collect more candies.
- Usually, you'll need between 25 and 50 candies to evolve a Pokémon. However, this amount will increase after the first evolution of a particular Pokémon.
Collect more candies by capturing Pokémon
Catch more Pokémon you want to evolve. For example, if you want to evolve a Pikachu, you need to catch more Pikachu.
Tap the “x” button at the center of the bottom of the screen if you're still looking for a Pikachu. This will return you to the Pokémon list.
Tap the “x” button again to open the map, which will show your location in the center.
Walk around your real-world location. Pokémon will appear on the screen. They resemble small creatures, somewhat dinosaur-like, that show up relatively close to you on the screen.
Tap on a Pokémon when you see it appear on the screen. You need to get closer to the Pokémon before you can tap on it. Your phone will display a screen that looks like a frame in real life, with the Pokémon inserted into it.
Use the Pokéball at the bottom of the screen to catch the Pokémon. Use your thumb or index finger to 'throw' the ball towards the wild Pokémon you want to catch. Tap the ball, move your finger toward the Pokémon, and release it.
Throw the ball again if you miss. Sometimes the wild Pokémon moves, or you might miss your aim. Try throwing the ball further if you miss on the first attempt.
Collect candies and stardust by catching Pokémon. For example, if you catch a wild Spearow, you'll receive Spearow candy.
- Usually, you'll get 5-10 candies the first time you catch a new species, and 3-5 candies for each subsequent catch of the same species.
Be patient. You can't control which wild Pokémon will appear, so you might need to wait until you catch enough of a particular Pokémon to evolve it.
Collect more candies by sending Pokémon to Professor Willow.
Open the app. Tap the red and white Pokéball icon in the center at the bottom of the screen.
Tap on the Pokémon button.
View your Pokémon list. Decide which Pokémon you want to duplicate and which ones you want to evolve. For example, if you have two Pikachu, one with 21 CP and the other with 11 CP, you may want to keep/evolve the one with 21 CP and send the one with 11 CP. The Pokémon with higher CP and HP will be stronger in battle.
- This strategy works best for Pokémon that you can catch in large numbers (like Pidgey or Rattata). If you catch rarer Pokémon, you might want to save them and not send them to Professor Willow.
Tap on the Pokémon you want to send away.
