Hold down the A button on Xbox, the X button on PlayStation, or the E key on PC. After a few seconds, your character will climb out of the armor. If exiting doesn’t work, try fast-traveling or reloading your save, then attempt to exit again.

Leaving Your Power Armor
Hold down the correct button for your device. Exiting your power armor depends on whether you're playing on PC, Xbox, or PlayStation. Fortunately, it's simple! When you're ready, press and hold one of these buttons until your character climbs out:
- Xbox: Hold A
- PlayStation: Hold X
- PC: Hold E on your keyboard
- If you've remapped your controls on PC, hold the button you assigned to armor interaction instead.
- To jump back into your power armor, just press the same button while standing behind it—no need to hold it down!
How to Exit Power Armor When You're Stuck
Move to an open, unobstructed spot. If you're unable to leave your power armor, first make sure there's plenty of space behind you. Tight areas can interfere with the exit animation, causing it to glitch or fail entirely.
Fast-travel or reboot the game to fix glitches. If a bug is keeping you trapped in your armor, open your Pip-Boy map and fast-travel to another location. Then, try stepping out again. Fast-traveling won’t use up your fusion core and may reset the game enough to let you exit.
- If fast-traveling doesn’t help, save your game, close Fallout 4, restart it, and load your save. This often clears bugs and gets you out of the armor.
Use a Power Armor Station to upgrade and exit your armor. Upgrading your armor at a Power Armor Station forces your character to step out, fixing most glitches that leave you stuck. Approach the station and hit “Craft” to hang up your armor; your character will automatically exit and the crafting menu will open.
- If none of these methods solve the problem, reinstalling Fallout 4 might be your last resort.
Getting Companions to Exit Power Armor
Talk to your companion and order them to leave the armor. If a companion is wearing power armor and you want them out, just select the “Talk” option. You'll then see “Exit Power Armor” instead of “Relationship”—choose it, and they’ll step out of the suit.
- Note: Paladin Danse is the exception. He always wears his own power armor and cannot be ordered out of it or reassigned to another suit.
How to Store Power Armor
Park your armor at a Power Armor Station inside a secure settlement. While you can leave your armor anywhere, a protected and accessible location like a settlement is best. Pick a settlement with strong defenses to keep your armor safe from thieves or enemy attacks.
- Always remove the fusion core before leaving the armor to prevent others from using it.
- Even in settlements, NPCs can hop into any armor that still has a fusion core.
- For example, in Fallout 4, the merchant Trashcan Carla is infamous for hijacking unattended power armor during settlement attacks—and she won’t willingly get out afterward!
Why You Might Need to Exit Power Armor
Save or swap out your armor’s fusion core when needed. In Fallout 4, power armor runs on fusion cores. When a core is depleted, your armor becomes sluggish, over-encumbers you, and disables V.A.T.S.—so it’s smart to limit how long you stay inside. Step out occasionally to conserve energy or switch to a fresh core.
- You also can't use workbenches while inside power armor, so you'll need to exit if you want to craft anything.
- Although power armor is fantastic for fights and while exploring the Glowing Sea, traveling on foot is often quicker and easier for general exploration!
