Sometimes, it can be quite challenging to feel happy when the task at hand is not enjoyable. Fortunately, life can become much brighter if you change your perspective. With just a few tools, you'll be able to discover how to find joy in almost anything you do.
Steps
Prioritize joy

Playfulness. Adults often believe that life should be serious, filled with responsibilities towards their families and work. However, playful moments as an adult are just as important as they were in childhood. Adults engage in play to learn, expand their perspectives, feel challenged, experience joy, and immerse themselves in fun activities. You cannot expect joy to come to you. You need to actively incorporate fun activities you enjoy into your daily and/or weekly schedule.
- Examples of integrating play into your life could be pursuing a new artistic hobby, spending more time with your kids, or organizing a game night or movie evening with a few friends.

Look on the bright side of everything. You can learn how to find joy in any activity by seeking hope. Even the most exhausting tasks offer something valuable; you just need to look for the positive and appreciate it.
- Practice seeking hope daily with the following activity: Spend 10 minutes a day for 3 weeks. Start by listing 5 things you love about your life (e.g., "watching the sunrise every morning" or "hearing the laughter of someone you love"). Now, think back to a time when things didn’t go smoothly. Describe the situation. Then, find 3 ways to look on the bright side of the difficulty.
- For example, your car breaks down on the way to work. You feel frustrated and impatient while waiting for the mechanic. But this is a chance for you to reread a poem your close friend asked you to read. You also have a few minutes to check in on your mother. Finally, the waiting time gives you a moment to reflect before your workday begins. Recognizing the bright side will help you realize that there are always some positive elements in negative situations.

Celebrate everything. Perhaps you’re not finding joy in life because you haven’t embraced all the little miracles and successes. Have you recently achieved something? Celebrate it. Did your friend just get a new job or lose some weight? Celebrate. You should look for ways to celebrate the small victories in life.
- Find a calendar that lists quirky holidays and make an effort to celebrate these occasions as much as possible.

Change your environment. Whether at work, school, or home, you should add more fun to your surroundings. Redecorate your office or bedroom with bright, cheerful colors that make you smile. Take care of a few plants. Altering your environment with lighting, fabric, colors, and other décor items, such as books, can boost your mood.
- The colors you choose for your surroundings will positively affect your mood and perspective. A study has shown that people in a green room tend to feel less stressed than those in a red room.
- In general, people feel happier when surrounded by yellow and green. If these colors aren’t suitable for your walls, you can opt for artwork, décor, or even flowers that can bring a fresh vibe. You can also add fun items, like colorful slinkys or stress balls, to lift your mood at home.
Enjoy the little things

Enjoy pleasant sounds. No matter what activity you’re doing, sound can significantly influence how much you enjoy it. For instance, you might be cleaning your bedroom or kitchen. This task can be unpleasant, but once you play your favorite tunes, it transforms into a fun cleaning concert.
- Identify sounds that make you happy or relaxed. Music. The sound of children laughing. The sound of waves crashing. Birds chirping. Try to surround yourself with these sounds more often. If you can’t find them in nature, you can listen to them on YouTube.
- Identify sounds that make you feel frustrated, sad, or angry. Car horns. The constant ringing of your phone. Try to avoid them when possible. If you can’t, you can counter them with sounds you like, such as listening to soothing music through headphones to drown out the phone’s constant ringing. Or perhaps you won’t achieve complete silence, but a little quiet time could help you enjoy your task more.

Be mindful of the comforting effects of physical touch. Humans naturally crave warmth and touch from others as it is a key expression of empathy. In today’s digital world, physical touch has become even more vital for personal growth. It enhances our sense of security and protection, boosts overall health, builds trust, strengthens team connections, and helps reduce the risk of illness.
- Engage in activities and surround yourself with people whose touch brings you joy. Doing so will help you feel more fulfilled in various areas of your life.

Relish the foods you love. Eating can be a joyful experience when done mindfully. Many people associate food with guilt, often saying no to treats like chocolate at work parties or buttery popcorn at the movies. However, when you practice mindful eating, you can enjoy the foods you love without guilt.
- Start by choosing a piece of chocolate or a small fruit. Observe its shape, scent, size, and texture. How do you react when you observe it (e.g., mouth watering, impatience)? Hold the food in your mouth for 30 seconds without chewing. After 30 seconds, chew. Then compare how you perceive the taste and texture before and after eating. Next, compare this experience with your usual eating habits.
- Incorporate mindful eating into most of your meals. Remove distractions like TV or books and focus entirely on the food you're eating.

Smile. If you’ve been stressed recently, put on a smile to counteract the negative effects of stress. Research from the Greater Good Science Center at Berkeley has shown that even a fake smile can bring positive physical health benefits. It helps your heart recover faster from stress.
- To improve your mood and physical well-being, try smiling while doing tasks you don’t particularly enjoy. It will help you feel better.
Shift your perspective

Be a tourist for a day. After living in one place for months or years, we often stop seeing it as extraordinary or interesting. You can reignite your passion for where you live by taking on the role of a tourist for a day.
- Visit local museums, parks, and art galleries. Take photos and try to experience these places as a tourist would. Try a new restaurant or order something unfamiliar from the menu of your favorite spot. Experience life from an outsider’s perspective – you’ll rediscover what you love about it.

Meditation. When you think of meditation, you might imagine it as a task rather than a time for enjoyment. Although it requires stillness and focus, meditation can actually become a fun activity. In fact, it allows you to connect with your inner self and the world around you, making you more conscious of the methods for finding joy in your surroundings.
- To make meditation enjoyable, try finding a meditation partner. Change your environment, as this can challenge and invigorate the experience. You can also explore guided meditation with engaging sounds and reminders.

Stop Negative Self-Talk. If the voice inside your head is constantly complaining or criticizing, it can be difficult to enjoy life. Overcoming negative self-talk invites more positivity into your day. To break the cycle of negative self-talk, follow these four steps:
- Pay more attention to your thoughts.
- Decide if your thoughts are helpful (for example, do they improve or worsen the situation)?
- Immediately stop negative thinking. Choose not to engage or welcome negative thoughts.
- Turn negative self-talk into positive. For instance, instead of saying "All the homework I have will prevent me from spending time with friends," reframe it as "If I focus and avoid procrastination, I can take breaks and spend time with my friends."

Cultivate a Grateful Heart. Developing gratitude allows you to view all activities as more enjoyable than displeasing. There are various ways to express gratitude, such as saying thank you or keeping a gratitude journal. However, one of the most effective methods for shifting perspective is by changing your language.
- For example, we often complain or grumble about tasks we must do. A useful suggestion is to reframe your language and describe each task in a more positive light. Changing "I have to" to "I get to" can create a positive shift in how you view and enjoy life.
