Introducing the Creative Commons Search Tool

Access the tool. To use the Creative Commons search tool, visit: http://search.creativecommons.org/.

Components. The Creative Commons search tool consists of the following elements:
- Enter Your Search Query: Input your search terms. This is the search field where you type in any phrase you want to search for.
- I want something that I can…: This is where you select different Creative Commons licenses for the images you want by checking or unchecking the corresponding boxes. There are two options:
- Option 1: use for commercial purposes. If you want search results that can be used commercially, check this box; otherwise, leave it unchecked.
- Option 2: modify, adapt, or build upon. If you want search results that can be modified, adapted, or used to create derivative works, check this box; otherwise, leave it unchecked.
- Search using: This is where you initiate the search based on your query and license selections by clicking on one of the small rectangular buttons below. These buttons are arranged in rows and columns, each linked to a specific website’s search function that may contain the images you’re looking for. Using the Creative Commons search tool, you can find openly licensed and/or public domain images from the following websites:
- Flickr. This site currently returns search results only when you enter search terms in English in the ‘Enter Your Search Query’ field.
- Google Images. This site will return search results regardless of whether you enter search terms in English or Vietnamese in the ‘Enter Your Search Query’ field.
- Open Clip Art Library. This site currently returns search results only when you enter search terms in English in the ‘Enter Your Search Query’ field.
- Pixabay. This site currently returns search results only when you enter search terms in English in the ‘Enter Your Search Query’ field.
Perform the search steps

- Notice the search results screen, where the top menu displays the phrase ‘Commercial use and mods allowed’. This accurately reflects the requirements you selected for the image results in the previous step.









Verify the license and/or usage rights of the resulting image
Open the selected image in a new tab. Right-click on the image you want to choose from the search results to open it in a new tab in your web browser.



Tips
- There are other sites and alternative methods to download openly licensed and/or public domain images available on the internet that you can freely use.
- Many image hosting platforms lack support for Vietnamese search functionality, meaning they do not work with Vietnamese, requiring you to input search terms in English. However, not all sites are like this, as evidenced by Google Images, which allows you to search for any image using Vietnamese.
