Today, Mytour will guide you on how to repair your scratched video game discs. Light scratches on the surface can often be treated with substances like petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or toothpaste. However, if the scratches are deeper, they may be beyond repair. Please note that any repair method for scratched discs is only temporary; eventually, you will need to replace the disc.
Steps

First, determine the type of scratch before attempting a repair. There are two main data surfaces on a game disc: the bottom plastic layer and the aluminum reflective storage layer. If the plastic layer is lightly scratched, it may cause issues reading the aluminum layer, leading to errors. This can often be fixed by applying a solid substance like Vaseline on the scratch.
- If the aluminum layer is scratched, it is not fixable. This happens when the disc is deeply scratched.
- Deep, circular scratches also cannot be repaired. In such cases, you may need to exchange or purchase a new disc.

Are you sure the problem is with the disc? If you insert another disc into the console or computer and the same error occurs, the issue may not be with the game.
- If the disc is scratched but you don’t encounter any errors while using it, you may not need to fix the scratch.
- Disc errors can stem from issues like outdated drivers or incompatible software.
- Be cautious with your gaming console or CD player, as they could have caused the scratches on the disc. If so, this could lead to similar issues with other discs placed in the reader.

Prepare the necessary tools. To fix the disc while minimizing potential damage, you will need the following items:
- Cloth and a flat surface.
- Microfiber cloth (do not use paper towels, facial tissues, or similar materials)
- Isopropyl alcohol
- Vaseline, toothpaste with baking soda, or disc polishing solution (available at computer stores or online)

Rinse the disc with cold water. This step ensures that any dirt, sand, or microscopic debris that could cause additional scratches during polishing is removed. Cold water will not damage the disc.
- Never use hot water, as it could damage the disc.

Shake the disc in the air. Gently shake the disc in the air until the surface is free of water.
- Do not wipe it, as this could cause additional scratches on the disc.

Place the cloth on a flat surface and set the disc down. The underside (reflective layer) of the disc should face up.

Spray a small amount of rubbing alcohol on the disc surface to remove stubborn stains, such as smudges.

Let the disc dry. The rubbing alcohol will evaporate, so you just need to wait about 20 to 30 minutes.

Apply a small amount of Vaseline to a microfiber cloth. You will use the microfiber cloth to apply petroleum jelly onto the disc.
- You can also substitute with toothpaste.
- If you have a scratch removal kit, you can apply the specialized solution directly onto the disc.

Gently polish the scratched area of the disc. You must wipe the petroleum jelly in straight lines (avoid circular motions) from the center of the disc through the scratch and outward.
- If the disc is deeply scratched, you may need to apply petroleum jelly across the entire surface.

Wipe off any excess petroleum jelly with a microfiber cloth. If there are any spots of Vaseline or toothpaste left on the disc, clean them off with a microfiber cloth.
- The reflective surface must be completely clean before you insert the disc into your gaming console or computer.

Test the disc. Insert the disc into your gaming console or computer and try to launch the game. If the disc works, that means you've successfully repaired it.
- If the disc still doesn't work, repeat the process a few times and test again after each attempt.
- Finally, if the game disc is scratched so severely that the gaming console or computer can't read it, you'll need to replace the disc.
Advice
- Other DIY methods for fixing scratches on discs include polishing with a banana, detergent, and peanut butter. Although none of these have been proven to work, they are worth trying if you're considering replacing the disc anyway.
- Many record stores (especially those specializing in used CDs) offer disc polishing services if you don’t want to do it yourself. These services usually come at a cost but are typically cheaper than buying a new disc.
- If you just bought the game disc and still have the receipt, you can return it to the store for a refund or exchange.
Warnings
- Do not insert a wet disc into your gaming console or computer.
- None of the methods in this article can fix deep scratches on a disc.
