Clogging is the most common cause of a washing machine failing to drain. Here is a simple solution to get your washing machine draining properly again.
Steps

Check the troubleshooting manual. Most washing machines come with a troubleshooting guide. If your machine shows an error code, refer to the manual to identify the problem. The most common error code related to draining is F9 E1, but your machine may differ. If the guide suggests that the drain pump needs replacing, consider calling a plumber or search online for instructions on how to replace this part.

Inspect the drain hose. Remove the drain hose from the back of the washing machine. Run a medium to high-pressure stream of water through the hose (connecting the hose to an outdoor water supply works best). If the hose is clogged, the water flow will push the obstruction out.
- When replacing the drain hose, make sure that the drain hole where the hose connects is no higher than 2.4 meters from the floor, and the hose outlet does not extend more than 11.4 cm into the drain. Also, ensure the drain mouth is not blocked by tape, and the hose is not kinked or twisted. These factors can affect the draining process.

Run a washing/spinning cycle on the machine. If the water drains properly, you have succeeded. If not, proceed to step 4.

Clean the drain pump. First, unplug the washing machine. Then, locate the drain pump inside the machine. This part is usually at the back in top-loaders and at the front in front-load machines. You may need to remove a panel to access it. Once you find the pump, you will see a round cover with an oval-shaped handle (often white plastic).

Turn the handle counterclockwise to remove the filter. Don't be afraid to apply force, as this cover is often tightly screwed. Have a bucket and towel ready to catch any water that may spill out. Inside the pump, you may find obstructions such as lint, coins, buttons, or even socks or small items of clothing.

Remove everything and clean the filter. Insert your finger into the hole on the right side of the filter to ensure there are no more blockages in the pump impeller and that it can rotate freely. Afterward, reinsert the filter, screw the drain pump cover clockwise until secure, and replace the panel you removed earlier.

Run the washing/spinning cycle again. The washing machine should drain water quickly. If it does not meet your expectations, the drain pump may need to be replaced, and you should contact a plumber or look up instructions online for how to replace the pump.
Tips
- Don't forget to place a bucket and towel around the area because when you remove the drain pump filter, all the water from the washing machine will spill out.
- If your laundry room is cramped, you may need to move the machine to a larger area, like the yard or basement, for easier repairs.
- For drainage issues, always check the drain hose. It may be kinked, especially when using hot water. The hose tends to soften with heat and can easily get bent.
Warning
- You must unplug the machine before attempting any repairs!
- If you're unfamiliar with any of the repair steps and fear causing damage to the washing machine, stop and call a professional. Repairing is always cheaper than buying a new machine.
