How to Flip an Image in Adobe Photoshop

If you're a graphic artist, designer, publisher, or photographer, flipping an image will be a familiar task. Photoshop makes it easier than ever, whether you need to flip part of an image or the entire thing.

Open the image you want to flip. This process will flip the entire image. The background frame of the image is simply what you see within the dark gray border surrounding the image in Photoshop.

Flip the image horizontally using the "Image" menu. The image will flip along an imaginary line from top to bottom. Go to Image → Image Rotation → Flip Canvas Horizontal.

Flip the image vertically using the "Image" menu. The image will flip along an imaginary line from left to right. Navigate to Image → Image Rotation → Flip Canvas Vertical.

Note that the task names might vary slightly across different versions of Photoshop. For example, in older versions, it may be labeled as "Rotate" instead of "Image Rotation." However, the terminology is still close enough to avoid confusion.

• If you’re having trouble finding it, click on "Help" in the top menu and type "Flip." The option you need will appear right away.

Select the layer you want to flip. You can flip the entire image or individual layers, so isolate the component you want to work with on a separate layer. Once you're ready, just select the layer from the layers panel.

Access the "Free Transform Mode" to work with your image. The selected area will be surrounded by a frame that allows you to flip, stretch, shrink, and invert the image. To enable free transform, follow these steps:

• Select "Edit" from the top menu, then click on "Free Transform".
• Select the appropriate layer, then press Ctrl+T on PC or ⌘ Cmd+T on Mac.

Right-click on the Free-Transformed icon to open the flip options group. At the bottom of the menu, you'll find options to "Flip Horizontally" or "Flip Vertically." Choose how you want the image to be flipped:

• The horizontal flip option will flip the image from left to right.
• The vertical flip option will flip the image from top to bottom.

Press "Enter" to confirm. Once you're satisfied with the transformation, press Enter to finalize the image as edited. You can also double-click inside the transformation box to complete the process.
