How to get rid of clover

Clover is a common weed that tends to invade dry, neglected, or poorly maintained lawns. While it doesn't harm your lawn, many homeowners prefer to remove it in order to maintain a weed-free green area. To eliminate clover, you can use commercial products or natural remedies. Additionally, it’s essential to prevent clover from returning by properly caring for your lawn to keep it healthy and well-maintained.

Applying nitrogen fertilizer. Clover doesn't thrive in nitrogen-rich environments, which makes nitrogen fertilizer an effective solution to eliminate this weed. You can find high-nitrogen fertilizers at garden stores or online. Follow the instructions on the packaging to apply it directly to the clover.

• If you only have small patches of clover, it’s recommended to use slow-release organic fertilizer.
• If you’re dealing with large patches of clover, opt for a fast-release fertilizer to remove them more quickly.
• You can apply fertilizer once a month, or follow the guidelines on the packaging. Fertilizing in the spring is also an effective preventive measure to stop clover from growing back.

Cover clover with plastic sheeting to eliminate it. Lay a trash bag or plastic sheeting over the clover and use stones to secure the edges. Leave it undisturbed for a few weeks so the clover doesn't receive sunlight or oxygen. Ensure the clover is completely covered to effectively kill it.

Fertilize your lawn in spring to prevent clover. Use a nitrogen-rich fertilizer on your lawn to nourish the grass and prevent weed growth, including clover. Fertilizing once a year in the spring also helps the grass thrive and reduces the chances of weed and pest invasions.

Remove small clover patches with a garden fork to prevent spreading. If you notice small clover patches in your lawn, you can use a hand fork to dig them out. Be sure to remove the roots to prevent regrowth.

Mow grass at a higher level to outgrow clover. Set your mower to a higher cutting height of about 7.5–9 cm to avoid cutting the grass too short. When mowing, don't cut the grass shorter than 2.5–4 cm. Taller grass will block sunlight, which clover and other weeds need to grow, preventing them from sprouting.

Water the lawn once or twice a week to prevent the growth of clover. Keep the lawn adequately hydrated to ensure that weeds like clover do not thrive. Aim to water the lawn with at least 2.5 cm of water, 2-3 times a week, early in the morning to maintain its lush green appearance. A dry lawn will lack nutrients and weaken, making it more susceptible to weed invasion like clover.
