Pigeons are visually appealing creatures, but their droppings can damage property and spread diseases to humans and other animals. You can prevent this by using deterrents and humane bird control methods. Before applying any measures, it's important to check national and local laws regarding bird protection and applicable control methods.
Steps
Make the pigeon's roosting areas less attractive

Use sharp wire mesh to keep pigeons from landing. You can attach this tool to any place where pigeons may land, like the roof. Purchase wire mesh at hardware stores or places that specialize in garden supplies. Follow the manufacturer's installation instructions. You can also substitute with a gentler option such as a 'rainbow spring,' available at department stores and toy shops. Stretch the spring along a balcony railing, with coils spaced no more than 4 cm apart. Secure the spring (or use duct tape) at 2 cm intervals. Pigeons dislike this because it makes the landing surface more difficult.
Use weather-resistant wire across areas where pigeons often land. Stretch the wire between two points at a height of 3 cm above the roosting site. This will make it difficult for pigeons to balance, preventing them from landing.

Install a steeply sloped cover. Covers made of metal, plywood, or PVC with slippery surfaces will prevent pigeons from perching on them. Products like BirdSlide™ include three panels that form a right triangle. The base of the panels fits securely on flat surfaces where pigeons tend to land. The surface angles range from 4 to 60 degrees, making it impossible for pigeons to perch. Attach the cover to eaves, wall ledges, window sills, and any other flat areas where pigeons commonly rest.

Do not feed pigeons. Avoid feeding pigeons or allowing others to feed them at your home. Pigeons can remember the exact location of a food source and will continually return to the place where they are fed.
Eliminate other food sources. Pigeons may feed on grass seeds, berries, olives, or pet food left outside. Avoid dropping seeds on the ground unless they are sprouting. Limiting access to food sources will help reduce pigeon numbers.
Seal any entry points.

Use a water hose to spray pigeons. They dislike being sprayed with water. Spray the flock as they arrive. Waiting until they have already started nesting will be too late.
Hang a kite to scare off pigeons. A lightweight or predator-shaped kite, resembling a hawk, is sold for this purpose. Hang the kite where pigeons often land. Note that pigeons may eventually get used to the presence of the stationary predator. To maintain effectiveness, move the kite around regularly.
Use reflective surfaces. Sunlight reflecting off objects can create a prism effect that affects the pigeons' vision. To repel pigeons, you can use reflective tape or silver-colored balloons. If you're on a budget, hang old CDs from nearby trees or along the eaves.
Tips
- Pigeons are intelligent and highly motivated to return home, which is why it can be difficult to get rid of them. If you can access their roosting site, you may be able to catch them in the dark. However, they will return unless they are nesting elsewhere.
- Pigeons reproduce quickly. Unless the initial pigeon population is small, shooting or trapping them will only be a temporary solution. The remaining pigeons will make up for lost numbers by reproducing rapidly.
- You can humanely reduce pigeon numbers by preventing reproduction. This can be done by feeding them large pellet food, which is too big for sparrows. While the cost may be high, this method is effective long-term and can reduce the pigeon population by up to 95%. You can purchase this pellet food online or at garden and seed supply stores. This method is approved by the EPA and animal welfare organizations.
- If you live outside of New Hampshire, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico, you can use this product without a permit.
Warning
- Do not harm pigeons unless absolutely necessary. They are living creatures. Any permanent exclusion method should be humane and comply with animal welfare laws.
- Never use polybutylene gel. This sticky substance can harm any animal or bird that comes into close contact. The gel can stick to the feathers of other birds, preventing them from flying. If birds or small animals step into the gel, they may become trapped and suffer a slow, painful death.
- Avoid using ultrasonic devices, as they affect not only pigeons but also other harmless birds, as well as dogs and cats. While humane devices have been approved for use at airports, they are not allowed for indoor use.
