It’s a fact that yellow stains under shirt sleeves can make us feel embarrassed. However, you don’t necessarily have to throw away your favorite shirt when it gets stained. Instead, try the following methods to remove these stubborn stains and prevent them from ruining your wardrobe.
Steps
Preparing to Remove Yellow Stains

Choose Your Preferred Stain Remover Product. There are various ways to treat yellow stains. Whether you use a product recommended by a friend or one you already have at home, it’s essential to select the one that works best for you. Below are some products you can choose from, followed by instructions for each one.
- Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)
- OxiClean (Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide)
- Vodka
- Dish Soap
- White Vinegar
- Crushed Aspirin

Pre-treat the stain by soaking it in cool or warm water. You should completely wet the stained area by pouring or dabbing water onto the fabric.
- Yellow stains occur when sweat reacts with aluminum in most deodorants and antiperspirants. The proteins in sweat combine with aluminum, creating yellow stains. Since the stains are protein-based, you need to soak the shirt in hot water immediately.
- However, hot water will help remove the stains most effectively. After soaking the shirt in cool water and treating the stain with your chosen method, be sure to wash the shirt in hot water to remove any leftover residue.

Mix water with the stain remover in a separate basin. Mix your chosen product with warm water to activate the stain-fighting properties. Follow the ratio and instructions for each product below:
- OxiClean, vodka, hydrogen peroxide, white vinegar, and dish soap should be mixed with water at a 1:1 ratio in the basin.
- Baking soda should be mixed with water at a 3:1 ratio.
- Crush the aspirin tablets first. Grind 3-4 tablets and mix them with a bowl of warm water. You can refer to the article on How to Remove Yellow Sweat Stains with Aspirin for detailed instructions.
Stir until the product fully combines with the water, forming a liquid solution or paste. Once the ingredients are mixed properly, you’ll know what your solution looks like.
- Baking soda will form a paste.
- Vodka, hydrogen peroxide, white vinegar, and aspirin will dissolve in water to form a liquid solution. Make sure you choose a basin large enough to submerge the entire shirt or the stained area in the solution.
- OxiClean and dish soap will dissolve in water if mixed at a 1:1 ratio. However, you can also create a paste if you mix OxiClean or dish soap with water at a 3:1 ratio. Many people prefer using the paste form as it works better on stubborn stains.
Removing Stains with a Paste Mixture

Apply a thick layer of the paste mixture to the stain. Ensure the mixture fully covers the stain before beginning the treatment.
Scrub the paste mixture onto the fabric with a toothbrush or nail brush. You may need more paste as the fabric will absorb the solution. You will begin to notice the stain disappearing.
- While baking soda alone is effective in removing stains, you can also pour vinegar over the stain while scrubbing. Be cautious, as vinegar may bubble up immediately upon contact with the baking soda.
- Baking soda is alkaline, while vinegar is acidic, so when combined, they create bubbles. This abrasive reaction can help break down dirt, and the bubbles may lift the stain from the fabric fibers.

Let the stain soak in the mixture for about 1 hour. This allows the stain remover enough time to penetrate and break down the chemicals causing the discoloration.
- For particularly stubborn stains, consider soaking overnight.

Wash as usual with the hottest water safe for the fabric.
- Some fabrics do not respond well to heat and may shrink or fade. Be sure to check the care label on your garment for proper washing instructions.

Repeat the steps if necessary. Stubborn stains often don’t disappear completely after the first treatment. You should scrub more paste onto the stain, soak it, and wash it again until the discoloration is fully gone.
- If using OxiClean or dish soap, you can soak the stubborn stain in the liquid solution. This can help improve the stain-removal effectiveness. Follow the steps for liquid solution stain removal below.
Removing Stains with a Liquid Solution

For extremely stubborn stains, mix the paste and use it in combination with soaking.
- Mix baking soda or create a high-concentration solution with OxiClean, dish soap, or aspirin to form a paste.
- Scrub the paste onto the stain with a toothbrush or nail brush as described earlier. Let the stain soak in the mixture for 1 hour.

Pour the liquid solution into a bucket or basin large enough to submerge the stained garment. You only need to soak the stained area, but you can soak the entire shirt if desired.
- For small stains, soaking is not necessary. Simply pour the solution into a spray bottle, and spray it onto the stained area. Be sure to spray generously to allow the solution to soak into the fabric before washing as usual.
- If you have sensitive skin, it is advisable to wear rubber gloves while performing the steps below, as stain removers often contain strong chemicals.
- Avoid using bleach for soaking, as the oxidizing chemicals in bleach can alter the color of your clothes. The products listed in this article are bleach-free, making them safe for fabrics.
Soak the fabric. The soaking time really depends on the severity of the stain. Light stains only need to soak for about 15-30 minutes, while heavy stains may require soaking for several hours or even overnight.
- Monitor the soaking process. If the stain fades quickly, you can stop soaking. If the stain only lightens after an hour, soaking overnight is recommended.
- Old stains are often more difficult to remove. It's best to address underarm stains as soon as they appear.

Wash as usual with the hottest water safe for the fabric.
- Some fabrics do not react well to heat, which may cause shrinking or color fading. Be sure to check the care label for the appropriate washing instructions.
