Ground Mai flowers are vibrant and popular blooms that are commonly grown along fences and in flower beds on arched gates during the summer. These stunning, healthy flowers come in a variety of colors and can be cultivated in different arrangements to create beautiful visual effects. Below is a guide on how to grow and care for Ground Mai flowers, which you can refer to for assistance.
Steps
Prepare for Planting

Purchase Ground Mai seedling from your local nursery. During spring, most nurseries sell Ground Mai seedlings in various colors, allowing you to choose the ones you prefer. You can opt for one or several types of Ground Mai to make your garden more colorful.
- There are 3 popular varieties of Ground Mai, each with different flower sizes and colors. The Tom Thumb variety has large, dark flowers; the Super Elfin variety has lighter flowers; and the Swirl variety has orange and red flowers with swirling patterns on the petals.
- Compared to growing from seeds, planting Ground Mai from seedlings is easier. However, if you prefer, you can buy seeds and grow them yourself. If you want to propagate through seeds, plant them in January to prepare for the spring planting season. Gently press the seeds into the seed mix and ensure the seed tray stays moist and maintain a temperature of 21°C.

Keep the seeds sufficiently moist before planting. If not watered adequately, Ground Mai flowers can easily dry out. Whether you purchase seedlings or plant seeds yourself, ensure they stay moist until you're ready to transplant them into pots or plant them in the ground.

Choose the right location for planting. Ground Mai flowers thrive both in pots and garden beds. This variety prefers cooler conditions, so select a spot that gets partial shade throughout the day. Make sure the soil remains moist but well-drained, as Ground Mai is susceptible to mold if water sits for too long.
- To check if the area drains well, observe it after a heavy rain. If the water pools, you’ll need to add peat moss or another mixture to improve drainage. If the water drains away, it's an excellent spot for planting Ground Mai.

Plant the flowers once the soil has warmed up. If you live in a colder climate, avoid planting Ground Mai while the weather is still chilly. Wait until the soil has warmed up to prevent the plants from freezing. Planting too early may cause the flowers to wilt or die.
Prepare the soil for planting. Ground Mai flowers prefer rich, slightly moist soil. You can dig a hole around 30 cm deep and mix the soil with organic compost or fertilizers. If planting in a pot, you can purchase nutrient-rich soil from garden centers.
Planting and Caring for Ground Mai

Dig holes and plant the flowers. Dig holes deep enough to accommodate the root ball of the plant, then place the plant in the ground or pot. The holes can be spaced 8-30 cm apart, depending on your preference. Lightly press the soil around the plant's stem. After planting, remember to water the Ground Mai flowers.
- Ground Mai plants can be planted close together to create a flower hedge. You can plant them in containers spaced 5-7.5 cm apart.
- You can also use hanging baskets for planting. The Ground Mai flowers will quickly grow and cover the empty space between the plants.

Keep the soil consistently moist. Ground Mai flowers will quickly wilt if they lack water. Water around the plant's roots in the morning every few days. Avoid watering at night, as the plants are prone to rot and waterlogging in excessively wet conditions.
- Plants in pots may dry out more quickly than those in the ground, so you may need to water potted plants more frequently.

Fertilize the plants. You can use slow-release fertilizer as directed on the package or apply liquid fertilizer every few weeks.
Tips
- Trim the stems of the Ground Mai flowers at least once to prevent the plant from becoming too leggy. You can soak the cuttings in water to root, then plant them to create new plants.
Warning
- Avoid overwatering. Excessive watering can create a breeding ground for mold and cause the plant to rot. If you're unsure whether the plant needs water, use your finger to check if the soil around the plant is moist.
