The PlayStation Portable (PSP) is an incredibly popular handheld gaming device within the hacking community. Hacking it is straightforward with numerous custom-made programs available. Follow the instructions in this article to unlock all the features of your PSP.
Steps
Understand the Basics

Learn about hacking PSP. Hacking your PSP allows you to run various custom software, known as Homebrew, which ranges from games to performance tools.
- A hacked PSP can run emulators, programs that let you play games from other handheld consoles on your PSP.
- A hacked PSP can also run game image files without the need for the original copy. This feature is exclusive to legal versions.

Know various types of hacks. Over the years, PSP hacking methods have become more diverse. As the handheld gaming system is no longer supported, a standard hack has been created that works on all systems running the latest official version.
Prepare to hack

Find your PSP model number. The model number determines which software you can install during and after the hack. Typically, there are two different procedures based on the model type.
- For older PSP models, remove the battery cover. On the right side of the Sony logo, you'll see “PSP-XXXX.” You just need to know if it’s a 1XXX, 2XXX, or 3XXX model.
- For the PSP Go, you can locate the model number by flipping open the screen and checking the top left corner. It will usually be labeled N1XXX.
- The ideal model is 2XXX or earlier. While you can still hack 3XXX and PSP Go models, some functionalities may be limited.

Update your PSP. To start the hack, make sure your PSP is updated to version 6.60. You can use the system update feature or download the file directly from Sony’s website.
- If you download the update file from Sony’s website, copy it to your PSP by connecting your PSP to your computer. Place the file in the PSP/GAME/UPDATE/ folder and then run the update file from the PSP.
- To copy the file to the PSP, switch your PSP to USB mode. After connecting your PSP to your computer, scroll the PSP menu left until you see the settings menu, then scroll up to select USB mode. Your PSP will then be accessible as a storage device on your computer.

Download custom firmware. You will need PRO-C, which can be found in various locations on the Internet. While in USB mode, extract the file and copy the firmware to the PSP/GAME/ folder on your PSP.
Install firmware

Install the copied firmware file. Scroll to the Game menu. Locate the 'PRO Update' icon and select it with the X button. The screen will turn black, and several options will appear. Press X to begin the firmware installation. After a moment, you will see a 'Completed' message. Press X again to run the firmware.

Use IPL. For PSP 1XXX and 2XXX models, you must run 'CIPL Flasher' from the Game menu. This will modify the IPL (Initial Program Loader), allowing you to set up custom firmware to load upon system startup.

Run Fast Recovery. For PSP 3XXX and PSP Go models, you will need to run Fast Recovery after every reboot, as IPL cannot be used on these devices. Running Fast Recovery allows you to load the custom firmware after the system starts.

Delete installation files. After using IPL, your PSP is now hacked and ready to use. You can delete the CIPL Flasher and PRO Update files. Be sure to keep Fast Recovery if you are using a 3XXX or PSP Go.
