The nose is a delicate part of the body, so even a small cut can be difficult to treat and sometimes painful. Proper care of a nose injury can help it heal faster and prevent infection. If you experience uncontrollable bleeding, an unhealed wound, or signs of infection, visit a doctor immediately.
Steps
Clean the Wound

Wash your hands. Ensure your hands are clean to avoid the risk of bacteria entering the open wound. Wash your hands under clean running water and scrub with soap for at least 20 seconds (sing the "Happy Birthday" song twice). Afterward, rinse thoroughly and dry your hands with a clean towel.

Apply gentle pressure to stop the bleeding. If the wound is bleeding and located near the nostril, you can use a clean material to apply gentle pressure until the bleeding stops. Do not hold your breath or insert anything into your nostrils. If the wound is not clearly visible or is not near the nostril, use the following first aid steps to control the bleeding:
- Sit upright and lean slightly forward. Hold this position to reduce pressure in the blood vessels of the nose and prevent swallowing blood.
- Pinch your nose between your thumb and index finger and hold for about 10 minutes. Breathe through your mouth during this time. Release after 10 minutes.
- If the bleeding persists, repeat the process. If it continues after 20 minutes, seek medical help as this may indicate a more serious injury than anticipated.
- Keep cool throughout the bleeding control process by wiping your face with a cold cloth or sucking on an ice cube.

Carefully remove debris from the wound. To reduce the risk of infection and complications, use sterile tweezers to remove any debris stuck in the wound. Be cautious when using tweezers to avoid making the wound worse or tearing the skin.

Use clean tools to wash the wound. If you feel something is still stuck in the cut or need to clean any skin fragments, tissue, or blood clots, sterilize all tools you plan to use. If you can't sterilize them, ensure the tools are as clean as possible. Here's how to sterilize your tools:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with water and soap.
- Wash all tools thoroughly with water and soap, such as tweezers, then rinse with clean water.
- Place the tools in a pot or pan and submerge them in water.
- Cover and boil the water, continuing to boil for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
- Remove the pot from the stove, keeping the lid on, and wait for it to cool down.
- Drain all water from the pot without touching the tools. If you don't plan to use the tools immediately, leave them in the pot with the lid on.
- Carefully take the tools out when ready to use. Avoid touching the parts of the tools that will come in contact with the wound; only handle the handles.

Select a wound cleaning product. Generally, washing with water and soap is the best way to clean a cut or small skin wound. For more sensitive and delicate skin areas, you may need to use both a cleansing product and an antiseptic.
- A commonly used product that serves as both a cleanser and an infection fighter is chlorhexidine. This product is available over-the-counter at most pharmacies. You need to dilute this solution before applying it to mucous membranes, such as inside the nose.
- Carefully read the product label. Do not use any product that is not intended for use inside the nose.

Clean the tissue around the wound. You may need to use a cotton swab or a rolled gauze to reach the wound and clean it. Dip the cotton swab or one end of the gauze into clean water and mild soap or a small amount of chlorhexidine to clean the wound. Rinse again with water and clean tools to remove all soap.
- Use clean or sterile tweezers to hold the gauze for easier cleaning of the wound.

Do not pick at the wound. Avoid touching the injury once medication has been applied. Refrain from using your hands to scratch off the scab. Picking at the wound may delay healing and increase the likelihood of infection.
- Gently clean the area and apply a safe moisturizer for the nose to prevent the scab from becoming too large and uncomfortable. Consider using an antibiotic ointment or a small amount of Vaseline to maintain moisture in the wound.
- This step will help the scab on the cut to become smaller, softer, and promote self-healing.
- Try applying Nasya oil into the nose at night to soothe and speed up the healing process. Nasya oil can be found at Ayurvedic medicine clinics or in natural health stores and supplement shops.

Continue applying the medication if necessary. Depending on the location, size, and depth of the cut, you may need to apply the medicine daily or every few days. Be cautious of infection.
Handling Severe Cases

Seek medical attention if you are unable to stop the bleeding easily. Persistent bleeding may indicate a broken bone, a deep cut, or a more serious underlying condition. Continuous bleeding lasting more than 15-20 minutes is a warning sign of a more severe issue.

Consult a doctor if the wound does not begin to heal within a few days. Some injuries inside the nostrils may require medication. The nose is a sensitive area with many blood vessels, fluids (such as mucus), and sinus drainage, all of which can contain bacteria. Some injuries to the nose require professional treatment, even from a specialist like an ENT doctor.
- In some cases, the injury may appear to heal well but can recur within a few weeks or months. You may need to consult with a doctor about antibiotics and medical procedures that can help prevent the injury from recurring.

Seek medical attention if the wound is caused by an animal. If the cut was inflicted by an animal or a sharp, contaminated object, it is crucial to ensure the wound is cleaned and treated properly. The earlier an infection is detected, the easier and safer it is to treat.
- It is best to visit a doctor as soon as possible if the wound is on the nose and was caused by something that could potentially lead to a systemic infection.

Watch for signs of infection. Regardless of the cause of the wound, you should seek medical care immediately if infection occurs. Keep an eye out for the following infection symptoms:
- The wound does not improve after several days or starts to worsen
- The area around the wound becomes swollen and warm
- There is thick discharge or pus coming from the wound with a foul odor
- Fever

Consult with your doctor about treatment options for infection. In most cases, the doctor will prescribe oral and topical antibiotics. Depending on the method of treatment, the wound can heal within 1-2 weeks after starting the antibiotics.
Advice
- Persistent wounds lasting for weeks or longer may indicate a more serious underlying condition and require medical attention.
- Avoid touching the wound. Doing so can delay healing and increase the risk of bacteria entering, leading to infection.
- Symptoms such as pain, swelling, or bruising may indicate a broken bone rather than just a cut. If you experience these signs, see a doctor for proper treatment.
- Recurring or prolonged nosebleeds may require medical procedures. The wound may be deeper or longer than expected.
- If the cut is located far inside the nostril and is difficult to see or reach, consult a doctor for proper care.
- A diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables can help accelerate the healing process.
- Ensure you are up to date on your tetanus vaccinations. Adults should receive a booster shot every 10 years.
