This guide shows you how to take cover behind objects in Grand Theft Auto V. These techniques work for both the classic third-person view and the newly remastered first-person mode of GTA 5.
Steps

Approach the object you want to hide behind. There are several objects you can use for cover, such as:
- Corners
- Boxes
- Cars
- Low walls

Face the cover object. Your character needs to face the object you plan to take cover behind.

Press the "Hide" button. The button varies depending on the platform you're playing Grand Theft Auto 5 on:
- On PC - Press Q.
- On Xbox - Press RB.
- On PlayStation - Press R1.

Peek from behind cover. Hold the "Aim" button—right-click on PC or the left trigger on controllers—to lean around or look over your cover.
- If you release the "Aim" button, you'll return to your hiding position.

Shoot from behind cover. Press the "Fire" button on your platform—left-click on PC or the right trigger on controllers—to shoot from behind your cover without exposing your body or head.
- If you aim before firing, you can shoot more accurately, but you'll expose part of your body while shooting.

Press the "Hide" button again. This step allows you to leave your hiding spot.
- You can also exit cover by walking away.
Tips
- Taking cover behind objects greatly increases your chances of survival, especially on higher difficulty levels.
Warning
- You can't always hide behind objects that look like they offer cover.
