Microsoft Word is a widely used word processor, arguably the most popular text editing software globally. However, to maximize its potential, you need to navigate its increasingly complex screens and menus. Fortunately, adding page numbers is straightforward.
Steps
Insert Page Numbers

Double-click at the top or bottom of the page. This action activates the "Design Menu," allowing you to add page numbers. Alternatively, you can click on the "Insert" tab in the top toolbar. The ribbon at the top will open, enabling you to insert page numbers.

Select "Page Number" to reveal the available options. You can choose where the page numbers will appear. Hover over each option ("Top of Page," "Bottom of Page," etc.) to see additional choices and decide whether you want the numbers aligned to the left, right, or center of the page.
- In the Design menu, the Page Number option is located on the left.
- In the Insert menu, the Page Number option is centered.

Choose a page number style to automatically set up numbering. Once you select the exact position for the page numbers, Word will automatically number the entire document.
- There are multiple numbering options available. However, you can also make minor adjustments if the page numbers don’t appear as desired.

Note: Some versions of Word may differ slightly in how numbering works. The location of certain buttons might vary depending on the Word version. However, all current versions of Word allow you to add page numbers by double-clicking at the top or bottom of the page. This action opens the Page Number menu.
Format Page Numbers

Double-click the page number to change the font, color, or style. If you want the page numbers to use a specific font, simply double-click on them. The page number will be highlighted in blue, similar to selected text in Word. Then, adjust the font, color, and size as usual. These settings will automatically apply throughout the document.

Start page numbering using page breaks. If you want to begin numbering from "1" on a subsequent page of your document, you need to separate that page. First, place the cursor at the beginning of the page where you want the numbering to start. Then:
- Click on "Page Layout" → "Breaks" in the top toolbar.
- Select "Next Page" under the "Breaks" section.
- Double-click the current page number.
- Click on "Page Number" and choose "Format Page Numbers."
- Select the bubble labeled "Start At," then choose "1" to restart numbering from 1.

Exclude the first page number to make the title page more visually appealing. Start by double-clicking the header or footer again to open the appropriate menu. Then, find and check the box for "Different First Page." This allows you to freely delete the first page number while keeping the rest intact.
- Sometimes, simply clicking the "Different First Page" button will automatically remove the first page number.
- Most presentations and reports don’t require a number on the first page, as it’s assumed to be "1" by default.

Use the "Format Page Numbers" option for specific changes, such as number styles and chapter headings. To enhance your skills, double-click the header or footer again, click on "Page Numbers," and select "Format Page Numbers" from the dropdown menu. Here, you can set up various numbering styles, such as letters or Roman numerals, and customize the basic appearance of the numbers. This feature isn’t overly powerful but is quite effective.

Press "esc" to exit the Header and Footer or Design toolbar. The escape key will return you to the standard editing mode while applying the page number formatting. Now you can continue writing!
Insert Page Numbers on Mobile Applications
Tap on "Insert." A simplified menu will appear, allowing you to format your document, making it even easier to use compared to the desktop version.

Select "Page Numbers" to set up numbering. There are multiple layout options for page numbers, including artistic styles.

Choose "Headers and Footers," then tap on "Options" to customize the numbers. This will allow you to set a different first page, adjust the appearance of odd and even pages, or remove all page numbers.

Seamlessly transfer documents from the Word app to the desktop software. Any changes you make on the app will carry over to the desktop program, so you can safely add or modify page numbers here, and all data will remain intact when you send the document to another program.
Tips
- If you plan to create a complex header or footer (such as your name or a title), consider adding page numbers first. This will make the process easier.
