You probably don't like seeing a strange dog leave its mess on your carefully trimmed lawn. If you have a dog at home, this behavior could negatively affect their training. Additionally, dogs are often drawn to the scent of others, meaning the appearance of a strange dog might trigger a series of other issues. Fortunately, there are a variety of natural, artificial, and even social solutions to help you prevent this from happening in the first place.
Steps to Take
Use Household Ingredients

Spray Baking Soda Solution Around the Lawn. To create the baking soda solution, mix about one cup of baking soda with 4 liters of water, then spray it around your lawn and the spots where the dog has marked at least twice a week.
- Baking soda will also prevent the grass from being damaged by the dog’s urine.
- It helps neutralize the urine scent, eliminating the unpleasant odor and deterring the dog from marking its territory with urine.

Spray Vinegar Around the Lawn. Spraying pure vinegar around the perimeter creates an invisible barrier that prevents both dogs and cats from entering your lawn. When they smell the vinegar, dogs will immediately walk away. However, you’ll need to repeat this process daily. You can also spray vinegar on spots where dogs have urinated.
- Vinegar is a natural weed killer that can damage various types of grass, so avoid spraying it over the entire lawn to prevent harming the grass.
- Vinegar neutralizes the urine scent, helping to eliminate unpleasant odors while discouraging dogs from marking their territory with urine.

Switch Fertilizer Types. Many dogs react strongly to the smell of organic fertilizers. If dogs are frequently drawn to your lawn, try using a different type of fertilizer. Dogs, in particular, are attracted to the scent of blood, fish, and bone-based fertilizers, so consider opting for plant-based fertilizers instead.

Plant Lavender or Thorny Plants. Dogs dislike the scent of lavender, which is quite pleasant to humans. Additionally, you can plant thorny bushes or other prickly plants around your lawn to create a natural barrier that keeps dogs out.

Be Cautious with Other Natural Ingredients. There are many natural solutions that are commonly used but proven to be harmful to dogs, such as hot chili peppers. You should also avoid using coffee grounds, mothballs, garlic powder, tobacco, ammonia solutions, and cleaning products to deter dogs from entering your lawn.
Talk to Your Neighbors

Maintain a friendly attitude. The first step in getting a dog to stop entering your lawn is to convince their owner to cooperate. Have a conversation with them about the issue you're facing without accusing them or their dog. Ideally, they will take more responsibility once they understand the situation.

Inform them that your lawn isn't safe. If the neighbors won't cooperate and you're okay with bending the truth a little, tell them you've recently sprayed pesticide on your lawn and it might pose a risk to their dog.
- This solution is not ideal for many reasons. You may face negative reactions, and lying could damage your credibility in the long run.

Take a firmer approach. If you know whose dog it is, contact them directly. Keep the tone light, perhaps inviting them over for a meal or a drink. Rather than placing blame, show empathy by explaining that they may not have been aware of the issue and now they need to know. If they agree to address the problem, shift the conversation to something else. Continuing to complain could frustrate them, making them less willing to cooperate.
- If you can't reach an agreement with your neighbors, consider sending them a formal complaint letter and keeping a copy for yourself. This will serve as proof if you need to escalate the matter to the authorities later.

File a complaint against your neighbors. Check local regulations to see if dog owners are held accountable for their pets' actions; most likely, they are. Then, take a photo of the dog caught in the act of urinating or defecating on your lawn, and contact the relevant authorities to file a complaint.
- Usually, local regulations are posted online. You can visit the official website to review the rules related to your issue.
- Alternatively, you could install a security camera to capture the dog's trespassing on your property. This will be useful if you need evidence for any legal action, especially if the neighbor becomes aggressive.
Use stronger measures

Use a dog repellent spray. Dog repellents are typically available in spray or powder form, which you can find at pet stores or garden supply shops. These products contain various scents that are designed to repel dogs, most of which are made from natural ingredients.
- Some repellents have unpleasant odors that dogs dislike, while others mimic the scent of predator urine, causing dogs to stay away in fear.

Install a motion-activated sprinkler. A motion-activated sprinkler not only waters your lawn but can also deter unwanted visitors like dogs, cats, or raccoons. Set up the device around your lawn or areas where dogs frequently relieve themselves. When a dog passes by, the motion sensor will trigger the sprinkler, startling the dog and encouraging it to leave.

Build a fence. Fencing is very effective at preventing animals from entering your lawn. Dogs often relieve themselves in easy-to-access areas, so they tend to avoid fenced lawns and prefer open spaces. Be sure to close the fence gate and regularly check for any signs of digging, as dogs may try to tunnel under the fence.
- If you already have a fence, inspect it for any gaps or holes that need repairing. You could also install an electric fence, though this method is more extreme.

Use a sonic dog deterrent device. This is another type of motion-activated device that you can mount on rooftops, trees, or fences. When a dog approaches, the sensor triggers the device to emit a sound or high-frequency sound waves that discomfort the dog, causing it to leave.
- The effectiveness of this device has not been conclusively proven, so until more convincing evidence emerges, it should be used only as a last resort.
