Squirrels are renowned for their cleverness and stubbornness. Traditional methods like fences, sprays, and traps often prove ineffective against them. However, you can make your yard and garden less inviting to squirrels by limiting their access to food sources and hiding spots.
Steps
Preventing Squirrel Intrusions

Inspect storage sheds and garages for squirrel nests. Garages and old sheds, especially those near trees, are ideal hiding spots for squirrels. Seal these entry points as soon as possible.

Hire a professional roofer to seal any holes in your roof or attic. If your roof is deteriorating, squirrels are likely to exploit these gaps to enter your home. Once inside, they pose a fire hazard due to their tendency to chew on electrical wires.

Regularly trim the trees in your yard. Ensure all branches are at least 2 meters away from your garage, roof, and house. For larger trees with thick branches, consider hiring a professional tree trimming service.
- Most squirrels prefer living in trees rather than storage sheds.

Avoid placing bird feeders in areas where you don’t want squirrels. Squirrels are attracted to fruits and seeds and will go to great lengths to access them. Invest in squirrel-proof bird feeders and hang them away from trees or rooftops.
- If you don’t want to compromise on your bird feeders, try using safflower seed blends. Many squirrels dislike this type of food. Other options include proso millet and nyjer seeds.
Removing Squirrels from Your Yard
Check for any squirrels that may have hidden in your storage areas or home.
Install metal collars around trees if you notice squirrels living in them in your area.

Fence your yard and keep dogs in the outdoor area.

Wrap electrical wires leading into your home. Purchase plastic tubing with a diameter of 5 to 7 cm and cut it lengthwise. The tubing will deter persistent squirrels from walking along the wires between trees and your house.
Deterring Squirrels with Capsaicin-Based Solutions

Mix one bottle of hot sauce (300 ml) with 4 liters of water. Pour the mixture around tree bases or other areas where squirrels frequently chew.
- Animal experts consider this a last resort. It can be hazardous to humans and pets and is less humane than simply making your home unwelcoming to squirrels.

Research the types of flowers and plants in your garden. If they are not overly sensitive, you can apply capsaicin-based solutions to these plants to prevent squirrels from eating them.

Combine chili powder with a small amount of birdseed. This method can deter squirrels from eating the mixture without affecting birds.
