Villages are unique structures in Minecraft, serving as homes for numerous villagers. These locations feature farms where players can gather food and chests filled with valuable items. Additionally, you'll find various houses and the opportunity to trade with villagers. Whether you plan to stay, visit, or raid, here's how to find a village in Minecraft!
Steps
On Desktop
Launch Minecraft. Select the Minecraft icon with the dirt block, then click PLAY at the bottom of the Minecraft Launcher.
Click Singleplayer. This button is located in the center of the Minecraft window. After clicking, you'll see a list of single-player worlds.
Select a world that allows cheats. Double-click to load this world. To find a village in Minecraft, the selected world must permit cheats.
- If you don't have a world that allows cheats, click Create New World, enter the world name, click More World Options..., toggle Allow Cheats: OFF, then click Create New World.
Open the Console. Press the / key to do this. The Console text box will appear at the bottom of the window.
Type the "locate" command. Enter locate Village and press the ↵ Enter key.
- The uppercase "V" in "Village" is crucial, as using a lowercase "v" will cause the command to fail.
Check the results. You'll see a white text line reading "Located Village at [x coordinate] (y?) [z coordinate]" near the bottom of the Minecraft window.
- For example, you might see "Located Village at 123 (y) 456" here.
- The y-coordinate (height above sea level) is often unknown, meaning you'll need to experiment to determine it.
Enter the "teleport" command. Reopen the Console and type teleport [player] [x coordinate] [y coordinate] [z coordinate], replacing the bracketed parts with the player's name and the village's coordinates. You'll need to guess the y-coordinate.
- For a player named "Waffles", following the previous step, you would type teleport Waffles 123 [y coordinate] 456. The name is case-sensitive.
- Try entering a number between 70 and 80 for the y-coordinate.
Press ↵ Enter. This executes your teleport command. As long as the y-coordinate isn't too high, causing your character to die or get stuck in a wall, you'll appear inside, above, or below the village.
- If you appear underground, dig upwards to reach the village.
- If stuck in a wall in Survival Mode, you'll quickly suffocate. To avoid this, try to escape immediately.
On Mobile
Launch Minecraft.
Tap the Minecraft icon, which resembles a grass-covered dirt block.
Tap Play. This button is located near the top of the Minecraft home screen.
Select a world. Tap on the world you wish to load. Unlike the desktop version of Minecraft, you can enable cheats directly in the game, allowing you to choose any world.
Tap "Pause". This button, represented by two vertical lines, is located at the top of the screen. It will open the Pause menu.
- If cheats are already enabled for your world, you can proceed directly to the "Tap 'Chat'" step.
Tap Settings. This option is found within the Pause menu.
Scroll down to "World Options". This section is located near the bottom of the menu on the right side of the screen.
Tap the dark gray "Activate Cheats" switch. The switch will turn light gray, indicating that cheats have been enabled.
Tap Continue when prompted. You'll return to the menu.
Resume the game. Tap the x in the top-right corner of the screen, then tap Resume Game at the top of the Pause menu.
Tap "Chat". This is the chat bubble icon located at the top of the screen. A text field will appear near the bottom of the screen.
Type the "locate" command. Tap the text field, enter /locate village, then tap → on the right side of the text field.
View the results. You'll see a message saying "The nearest Village is at block [x], (y?), [z]" at the bottom of the screen.
- For example, you might see "The nearest Village is at block -65, (y?), 342" or -616 y 1032.
Enter the "teleport" command. Reopen the "Chat" box, type /tp [name] [x coordinate] [y coordinate] [z coordinate], replacing the bracketed parts with the player's name and the village's coordinates. You'll need to guess the y-coordinate.
- For a player named "hippo" in the example above, you would type /tp hippo -65 [your guessed y-coordinate] 342. The name is case-sensitive.
- Typically, you'll need to guess the y-coordinate, which determines the village's height.
Tap →. This button is on the right side of the text box. You'll be instantly teleported to the entered coordinates. As long as the y-coordinate isn't too high, causing your character to fall to their death or get stuck in a wall, you'll appear inside, above, or below the village.
- If you appear underground, dig upwards to reach the village.
- If stuck in a wall in Survival Mode, you'll quickly suffocate. To avoid this, try to escape immediately.
On Gaming Consoles
Understand the process. Since you can't type commands to locate a village and teleport to it in the console version of Minecraft, you'll need to find the Seed Code for a world and enter it into an online village finder to determine the village's location. Then, you can use a map to navigate to the village manually.
Launch Minecraft. Select the Minecraft icon to open the game. If you purchased Minecraft on a disc, insert it before selecting the game.
Select Play Game. This button is located at the top of the main menu in Minecraft.
Choose a world. Press A or X on the selected world to open its corresponding page.
Note the world's Seed. Near the top of the menu, you'll see a "Seed:" section followed by a long number. You'll need to enter this number into a website on your computer to locate a village in your world.
Open the ChunkBase Village Finder on your computer. Visit http://chunkbase.com/apps/village-finder using a browser on your computer.
Enter the world's Seed. In the "Seed" text field near the middle of the page, type the number displayed at the top of the world menu in Minecraft.
Click Find Villages!. This blue button is located on the right side of the page. You'll see yellow dots on the map representing villages.
Scroll down and select your gaming console. Click PC (1.10 and up) at the bottom right of the page, then choose XOne/PS4 or X360/PS3 from the dropdown menu. This step customizes the map to display villages specific to your console version.
Zoom out if necessary. If no yellow dots are visible on the map, click and drag the slider at the bottom to the left.
Locate the village's position. Select one of the yellow dots on the map, then check the coordinates displayed at the bottom left corner. Note these coordinates to guide your search for the village later.
Create a map and use it. In the console version of Minecraft, you can view your current coordinates if you have a map.
Head to the village. Once equipped with a map, walk towards the village. When the x and z coordinates intersect, you'll be near the village.
- The ChunkBase Village Finder isn't 100% accurate, so you might find yourself close to (rather than inside) the village. You'll need to explore the area if you don't spot it immediately.
- Ignore the y-coordinate, as you'll naturally know whether to go up or down when you reach the intersection of the village's x and z coordinates.
Searching for Villages Manually
Understand that finding a village can take hours. Even in smaller worlds, locating a village among tens of thousands of blocks is like searching for a needle in a haystack.
Know where to look. Villages commonly appear in deserts, savannas, Taiga forests (including snowy Taiga), and plains (which may have ice). If you're in a jungle, mushroom biome, Tundra, or other village-less areas, don't waste time searching.
Know what to look for. Villages are typically made of wood planks and cobblestone, often standing out distinctly from their surroundings.
Prepare for a long journey. Finding a village can take hours, so bring essential tools, a bed, food, and weapons before setting out. It's best to travel during the day and camp at night, so consider digging a shelter and sealing most entrances to keep monsters away.
- Leave at least one block open to avoid suffocation.
Tame a mount for faster travel. If you have a saddle, equip it on a mount to speed up exploration. Find a horse and interact with it repeatedly using an empty hand until it stops bucking you off. Then, approach the tamed horse and select it with the saddle to ride and control it.
Look for a vantage point. Climb the highest hill in the area where you suspect a village might be. This will give you a better view of the surroundings and make it easier to spot man-made structures.
Search for torches at night. Torchlight is more visible at night than during the day. While fire at night might resemble lava, it's more likely to be a torch—and where there's a torch, there's often a village.
- Be cautious if you're in Survival Mode on a difficulty other than "Peaceful." It's best to wait until daylight to avoid monsters while searching for torches.
Keep exploring. Villages spawn randomly, so there's no guaranteed way to find one without third-party tools. To maximize your chances, thoroughly explore each area you pass through.

- In Minecraft PE, you might spawn near a village if you create a world using a preset.
