Remaining logged into your Facebook account is only suitable if you're using a personal computer. However, if you share a computer with others, it's best to log out immediately after use. If you forget to log out on a public or shared computer, you can use Facebook's security settings to log out remotely. If you need to log out of the Messenger app, you'll need to take a few extra steps since the app doesn't integrate the logout feature. To stop using Facebook entirely, you can also deactivate your account.
Steps
Logging Out on the Facebook Website

Click the small arrow in the top-right corner. This icon is located on the right side of the blue Facebook header. It's a downward-pointing arrow that looks like ▼.

Click on "Log Out" below the menu. This action will immediately log you out of your Facebook account.
Logging Out on the Mobile App

Open the Facebook menu. Tap the "☰ More" button at the bottom-right corner (iOS) or the ☰ button at the top-right corner (Android) to access the Facebook menu.

Scroll down and select "Log Out". This option is located at the bottom of the menu.
Remote Logout

Use this method to log out of your Facebook account on a computer or device you no longer use. If you forget to log out of Facebook on a computer at work, school, or a friend's phone, you can use Security Settings to log out remotely.
- This method can also help you log out of Facebook Messenger, which doesn't have a built-in logout option.

Go to the Security Settings page. You'll find this option in your account settings.
- On a computer - Click the downward arrow at the top-right corner of the Facebook homepage, select "Settings," then choose "Security." You can also access it directly at facebook.com/settings?tab=security and log in when prompted.
- On the Facebook app and mobile browser - Tap the ☰ button, scroll down, select "Account Settings," and choose "Security."

Open the list of login sessions. This list shows all the times you've logged into Facebook. It includes details about your current device, mobile devices, and other devices used to access your account.
- On a computer - Click "Where You're Logged In." You'll find this near the bottom of the Security menu.
- On the Facebook app and mobile browser - Select "Active Sessions."

Expand each section to see where you're logged in (for computers). You'll see the device name (provided to Facebook), location, and the last login time. Use this information to identify the session you want to end.
- You'll see your active sessions, including the current one, mobile devices, and Messenger.

End a login session to log out remotely. This will terminate the session on that device, and Facebook will return to the login screen. If someone is viewing your Facebook on that browser or app, they will be logged out immediately.
- On a computer - Click "End Activity" next to the session to log out.
- On the Facebook app and mobile browser - Tap the "X" next to the session to log out.

Click "End All Activity" to log out of all sessions (for computers). If you want to ensure no active sessions are left, click the "End All Activity" link above the "Where you're logged in" section. This will log you out of Facebook on all devices, including the current one.
- This option is only available when accessing Facebook on a computer.
Logging Out of the Facebook Messenger App
Use the remote logout method. Facebook Messenger doesn't have a built-in logout option in the app. This means you'll need to take extra steps to log out of your account. The quickest way is to use the remote logout method described above. Look for the "Messenger" login session and end it to log out.
- This is the only way to log out of Messenger on iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.

Clear the app data (for Android). Another way to log out of Messenger on Android is to clear the app's data as follows:
- Open the Android app settings.
- Select "Apps" or "Application Manager."
- Choose "Messenger" from the app list.
- Tap the "Clear Data" button. If you don't see this option, select "Storage" first. This will log you out of your Messenger account.

Log out of your Facebook account to avoid automatically logging back into Messenger. If you log into your Facebook account on a device with Messenger, the app will automatically log in with a single tap. Therefore, you should log out of Facebook if you don't want to easily log back into Messenger.
