Impact smoke bombs are not to be taken lightly. You should only attempt to make them if you're fully prepared to handle dangerous substances like black powder. Primarily used for fun and mischief, these bombs work similarly to those seen in movies. Impact smoke bombs come in various strengths, so be sure to choose one that suits your needs.
Steps
Creating the Impact Smoke Bomb

Gather Materials. Fillers can also be used to create regular smoke bombs by adding a fuse. You'll need an electronic scale, KNO3 (potassium nitrate) chemicals, powdered sugar, gloves, a popsicle stick or similar stirring rod, and a durable beaker.
- You'll also need something to mold the wet powder, such as a cardboard toilet paper roll core.
- KNO3 can be found at large hardware stores. If you're struggling, you may also find it at hobby shops or online.
- The best gloves for this job are rubber gloves.
- Wear safety goggles and cover your skin. This is essential when heating chemicals. Make sure to wear thick rubber gloves.
- For the casing, you'll also need these materials: toy paper fuse, a craft knife, tape, and black powder. Toy fuse is ammunition designed for toy guns.
- Black powder or gunpowder can be found at most sporting goods stores that sell firearms. If you're having trouble, you can look for it online.

Weigh the Powder. You will need 70 grams (2.5 ounces) of KNO3 and 30 grams of sugar. Once you've weighed the powders, pour them into a beaker and mix them thoroughly.

Heat the Mixture. Heat the mixture on a low-medium setting. Be sure to wear gloves and stir constantly to prevent the compound from burning. Continue heating and stirring until the mixture becomes liquid and turns a golden brown color.
- Be cautious of fire! If you're not careful, the mixture may catch fire and start smoking.

Pour into the Mold. Pour the liquid mixture into the chosen paper tube. Choose a small tube so the smoke bomb can be used quickly. The best type of tube is one that you can easily remove once the mixture solidifies, such as a quarter-sized cardboard toilet paper roll. You could also use a film roll, the kind you send to a photo developing center.

Wait for the Mixture to Set. Let the mixture cool for a few hours. If you want to be extra cautious, place the tube in the refrigerator or freezer. It will take over an hour for the mixture to cool in the freezer.

Wrap the Fuse. Attach a small piece of tape to the fuse's edge and stick it to the top of the KNO3 compound block, then wrap the fuse around the hardened mixture. Once it's wrapped around the entire outer surface of the paper tube, secure the fuse to the tube with tape.

Prepare black powder. Cut two pieces of tape, slightly longer than the KNO3 block. Place one piece of tape over the other, forming a cross shape. Ensure the sticky side faces up. Now, sprinkle black powder over the cross-shaped tape.
- Make sure to keep the outer side of the tape clean.

Apply the tape. Once the cross-shaped tape with black powder is prepared, it's time to complete the task. Stick the tape onto the KNO3 chemical block that is wrapped in a toy fuse. Ensure the cross is neatly aligned on the bomb's body, making it visually appealing. After smoothing out any air bubbles, your task is essentially finished.
- Step outside and throw the smoke bomb onto a hard surface, such as cement.
Utilize the firework explosion technique

Gather the materials. For this method, you will need a wrapping made of paper with a smooth surface or something fragile like tissue paper. As for the filler, you will need fireworks (or 'exploding' rocks) and magnesium powder.
- Magnesium powder can be found in certain hobby stores or online. Be cautious of magnesium citrate, as it is a magnesium supplement.

Combine the materials. Sprinkle the magnesium powder over the fireworks with a paper lining underneath. To create a standard smoke bomb, you'll need three to four fireworks and one tablespoon of magnesium powder.

Ingredient Package. The bomb-making process concludes by selecting the casing to wrap the two components together. If you can't find anything else at home, using tissue paper will do just fine for a simple option. After wrapping, tightly twist the cloth around the mixture. Once done, throw it onto a hard surface and watch as a bright light flashes, the bomb explodes, and smoke emerges!
- You can also use adhesive tape or glue to seal the smoke bomb.
Warning
- Always wear protective goggles and conduct experiments outdoors.
- Never throw the bomb at any living creatures and keep a safe distance from buildings.
