How to Make a Smoking Pipe from an Apple

If you’re in the mood for a smoke but don’t have a pipe, why not craft one from an apple? It only takes a few minutes to make an apple smoking pipe, and it works incredibly well! Just be sure to avoid using it once the apple starts to soften. Here are two methods you can use to create your own smoking pipe.

Prepare an apple and a pen. This pipe is considered ‘pure’ since all you need is an apple and a small pointed tool to create a hole in the fruit. Here, we’ll use a pen.

• Choose a fresh, firm apple. A soft apple will crumble when you try to drill a hole through it.
• It’s best to use a ballpoint pen. You can easily remove the ink cartridge and avoid getting ink on the apple. Simply discard the ink and reassemble the pen.
• Don’t use a pencil. The pencil might break when you try to carve the hole in the apple.

Remove the apple stem. Use your fingers to twist and pull the stem off the apple, or you can carve a small hole around the stem to remove it. Make sure to completely remove the stem; if it breaks off, use your fingers to dig deeper into the stem's base to remove it.

Drill a hole from the top through the apple. Position the pen's tip where the stem was removed and twist it into the apple. Push the pen until the hole extends about halfway through the apple.

• If you have difficulty pressing the pen into the apple, try both pressing and twisting it.
• Once the initial hole is made, you can remove the pen, detach the pen's tip, and use the empty pen body to press further down to the bottom of the apple. The apple's core will slide into the pen. When you're finished, remove the pen and discard the apple remnants.

Drill a second hole near the bottom of the apple. This hole should be about 1 cm from the center of the apple's bottom, cutting across the first hole you made earlier.

Drill a third hole from the side of the apple. Push the pen from the side of the apple, about 2-3 cm below the top hole, until it intersects with the system of holes you've created. This hole will serve as the smoke hole when you smoke, so it should be placed conveniently so that you can cover it with your finger while lighting the pipe.

Create a hole for the tobacco. Use the pen or another sharp object to carve a hollow at the top of the apple, where you made the first hole. Make sure the hole is wide enough to hold the amount of tobacco you want to smoke.

Smoke the pipe. Fill the tobacco chamber with your desired tobacco. Hold the apple with one hand, using your finger to cover the smoke hole — the third hole you created on the apple's body. Use your other hand to light the tobacco and inhale through the hole near the bottom of the apple.

Gather an apple, a knife, a spoon, and a pencil. For this method, you’ll need a few extra tools, but the pipe is easy to make and you’ll end up with a great-looking one.

Cut off the top (lid) of the apple. Slice about 2.5 cm from the apple stem. Remove the stem from the apple's top lid.

• Don’t cut too close to the stem. The lid will be turned into the tobacco chamber, so it needs to be thick and firm enough.
• You may need to twist the stem off the lid carefully, so as not to damage the apple’s lid.

Scoop out the core to create the smoking chamber. Use the spoon to hollow out a circular chamber from the apple’s core. Rotate the spoon around the apple’s interior about 1 cm from the edge. Press the spoon into the apple's flesh so the chamber is about 1 cm above the bottom of the apple.

• Don’t carve too deep into the sides or bottom of the apple when using the spoon. The pipe won’t be sturdy unless you leave enough apple flesh to form a solid pipe structure.
• If you can’t use the spoon to separate the apple flesh, use the knife to cut around the core, then scoop out the remaining apple flesh around it with the spoon.

Create the carb and mouthpiece. Hold the base of the apple in your hand. Carefully use a pencil to drill a hole about 2.5 cm below the edge of the apple. This will be the carb hole. Drill a second hole a few centimeters away from the carb hole to create the mouthpiece.

Smoke the pipe. Place the apple lid back on top of the apple. Pack the tobacco you want to smoke into the hole on the lid (the spot where you removed the stem). Hold the apple with one hand, using your finger to cover the carb hole, and place your mouth on the mouthpiece. Use your other hand to light the tobacco and inhale.
