Aloo Paratha is a flavorful flatbread that combines a widely loved ingredient: potatoes. In Urdu, "Aloo" means potatoes. This dish is simple to prepare and serves as a delicious breakfast or snack. This easy recipe yields four Aloo Paratha flatbreads.
Ingredients
- 4 boiled potatoes, peeled and mashed
- Salt
- Cumin powder
- Red chili powder
- 1 finely chopped onion (optional)
- Dough ingredients
- 2 cups of wheat flour or barley flour
- 1 tablespoon of cooking oil (preferably vegetable oil)
- Water
- 4 tablespoons of butter
Steps

Knead the dough with 1/2 tablespoon of oil and enough water. The dough should be slightly drier than the pizza dough you usually make.

Let the dough rest for half an hour.

With the cooked and mashed potatoes, add all the dry spices, onions, and salt. Mix well to avoid lumps and ensure the mashed potatoes are not watery.

Sprinkle some dry flour on the kitchen counter. Shape the kneaded dough into small round balls.

Roll the dough ball to form a small, thick circle.

Place the dough in your left hand and add the potato filling to the center.

Fold the edges together like you would with a dumpling, ensuring the filling is completely enclosed.

Roll the dough to reshape it into a round form.

Sprinkle some dry flour on the bread and the rolling surface. Place the dough down and gently press a cross shape with a rolling pin. This helps evenly distribute the filling.

Roll the dough gently into a flat shape without making it too thin. Be careful to ensure the filling does not spill out.

Heat the pan over medium heat. Melt the butter, then cook both sides of the bread by flipping until they turn golden brown.

Your Paratha is now ready. Serve it with Indian pickles, yogurt, or simply dip it in a bit of butter. This dish is perfect for warming up on a cold day.
Tips
- Avoid overheating the pan, as it can burn the Paratha without cooking it thoroughly. Keep the pan at medium heat and cook slowly.
- Initially, use more dough and less filling. Once you're comfortable making Paratha, reduce the dough and increase the filling.
- Enhance the nutritional value by adding finely chopped cooked carrots, mashed beans, etc.
- Avoid using Idaho potatoes as they tend to release too much water.
Warnings
- The pan is hot; avoid touching it or letting children near it.
