Are you excited to bake a delicious chocolate-flavored cake? With so many variations available, it can be tough to decide. Below is a simple chocolate cake recipe that allows you to create different styles of chocolate cakes suitable for various occasions.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups (190 g) flour
- 1 cup (200 g) sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon (7 g) salt
- 1 teaspoon (2 g) baking soda
- 3 tablespoons (40 g) cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) vinegar
- 6 tablespoons (90 ml) oil
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) vanilla essence or 2 teaspoons (2 ml) vanilla extract (optional)
- 1 cup (200 ml) water
- 2 eggs
Steps

Sift all the dry ingredients. The dry ingredients include flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, and cocoa powder. Simply pour all the ingredients into a sifter placed over a bowl and push back and forth to remove any clumps.
Add the wet ingredients and mix well. The wet ingredients consist of vinegar, oil, vanilla, water, and eggs. Some prefer adding each wet ingredient individually to the dry mixture, while others prefer mixing the wet ingredients together in a separate bowl before combining them with the dry ingredients.
Pour the mixture into a greased and floured round pan. The oil and flour will prevent the mixture from sticking to the pan.
Bake at 180°C for 30 minutes.
Let the cake cool for about 5 minutes.
Apply cream if desired.
Variations
- Create a soft and fluffy chocolate cake to enjoy as a light dessert.
- Opt for a dense chocolate cake if you prefer a rich and creamy dessert.
- Combine hazelnut chocolate with chocolate cake for a classic twist.
- Make a no-bake chocolate cake using chocolate cookies.
- If you run out of frosting, try sprinkling chocolate cookie crumbs on top.
- Prepare chocolate walnut bread to pair with afternoon tea.
- Experiment with an Oreo cookie and chocolate-coated cake for a crunchy delight.
Tips
- Decorate with chocolate cookies, nuts, or piped cream flowers.
- If using eggs, whisk the yolks separately and add them first, then fold in the whipped whites last.
- Halve the ingredients for a smaller cake or double them for a larger one.
- Do not remove or cut the cake from the pan until it cools for at least 5 minutes. Ideally, let it cool completely. Only remove or cut the cake early if there are baking time constraints or if it must be served warm.
- Check if the cake is done by inserting a toothpick into the center.
- Bake at a lower temperature for a softer, fluffier texture, though it will take longer.
- Add more baking powder for a softer cake.
- Substitute water with milk for a richer flavor.
- For vegetarians, prepare an egg-free cake. Some may also avoid sour cream or butter, so consider using rice flour as a substitute. Note that rice flour will result in a thinner batter.
- Taste the cake before freezing it.
