Many special effects makeup artists and art enthusiasts use fake blood to create realistic, gory visuals, especially during Halloween. Nothing amplifies Halloween fear like copious amounts of sticky red liquid. You can quickly whip up edible fake blood using common kitchen ingredients. Create quick fake blood with corn syrup or mix deep red fake blood using powdered sugar. For thicker blood, use flour, which will thicken as it cools. This way, you won’t need to purchase fake blood.
Ingredients
Edible fake blood made from corn syrup
- ½ cup red fruit juice
- 1 cup corn syrup
- 2 tablespoons red food coloring
- 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
Edible fake blood made from powdered sugar
- cups powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons red food coloring
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 cup water
Edible fake blood made from flour
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1 cup water
- 2 tablespoons red food coloring
Steps
Making edible fake blood with corn syrup

Measure and add ingredients to the blender. Grab a blender, measuring cups, and spoons. Measure and add each ingredient into the blender. This mixture will create a batch of fake blood that is safe to use and consume. You will need:
- ½ cup red fruit juice
- 1 cup corn syrup (or golden syrup)
- 2 tablespoons red food coloring
- 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
Blend the fake blood until smooth. Secure the blender lid and blend on high for about 30 seconds to combine the ingredients and create a smooth fake blood. For better results, pause after 15 seconds and blend again. This ensures any clumps of cocoa powder or cornstarch are fully dissolved.
- If you don’t have a blender, you can use a food processor instead.

Adjust the color of the fake blood. Open the blender lid and stir the mixture with a spoon to check the color. Drizzle a small amount onto white paper to see the color more clearly. If adjustments are needed, add more red food coloring, chocolate syrup, or cocoa powder.
- For example, if the blood appears too pink or pale, add a few drops of red food coloring and blend again. If it’s too bright red, add a bit of chocolate syrup or flour and blend further.

Thicken the fake blood. If you want the blood to be thicker and flow more slowly, add a bit more corn syrup. To make it even thicker, double the amount of corn syrup. Keep in mind you’ll need to adjust the food coloring as it may dilute.
- If you prefer not to use corn syrup, you can substitute it with golden syrup.
Making edible fake blood with granulated sugar
Measure water and granulated sugar into the blender. Pour 1 cup of water into a blender or food processor. Measure 1.5 cups of granulated sugar and add it to the blender.
Blend the water and sugar. Secure the blender lid and blend the water and sugar for about 30 seconds. The sugar will dissolve completely in the water.
- Blending ensures any clumps of sugar are fully dissolved.
Add red food coloring and cocoa powder to the blender. Pour 2 tablespoons of red food coloring into the blender. Secure the lid and blend until the mixture is evenly colored. Add 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder and blend again.
- The cocoa powder will slightly thicken the fake blood and give it a more realistic color.
Adjust the color of the fake blood. Open the blender lid and dip a spoon into the mixture. Drizzle a small amount onto a paper towel to check the color. Add more red food coloring or cocoa powder to achieve your desired shade.
- You can transfer the fake blood into a squeeze bottle for easy application. Store it in the refrigerator until needed.
Making edible fake blood with flour
Combine water and flour in a pot. Take a small pot and pour in 1 cup of water. Add 1 tablespoon of flour and stir thoroughly to dissolve any lumps. Ensure the flour is fully mixed into the water.
- If you don’t have a whisk, you can use a fork to stir the water and flour evenly.
Cook the mixture. Turn the stove to high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to a gentle simmer. Let the mixture simmer for about 30 minutes. Turn off the heat and allow it to cool.
- Cooking the flour and water will thicken the fake blood.
Stir in food coloring. Add 2 tablespoons of red food coloring to the cooled flour and water mixture. Stir until the color is evenly distributed.
- You can add more red food coloring to brighten the shade of the fake blood.
