Gunpowder is a mixture of saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal. The most challenging part of making gunpowder is acquiring these three ingredients. Once you have them, you'll mix them together to create a black powder that can explode. Be cautious when handling gunpowder, and always store it away from heat sources and flames. Gathering Ingredients

Purchase some saltpeter. Saltpeter, commonly known as potassium nitrate, was once derived from bat guano or horse urine, along with other animal waste. It has applications in fertilizers, scientific projects, and certain recipes. There are several ways to obtain saltpeter:
- Look for "stump remover" powder at a garden supply store. This powder is essentially saltpeter, also sold under the names niter or potassium nitrate.
- Order saltpeter online. Searching for "saltpeter" online will yield many results, making it easy to have a supply delivered to your home.
- Make saltpeter from cold packs. Cold packs, usually priced at a few dozen thousand dong, contain sodium nitrate and water, which are used to produce saltpeter.
- Create saltpeter from urine. This is undoubtedly the most difficult method, but some people prefer to start with basic materials. First, place animal manure in a container equipped with a pipe, valve, and filter. Then, urinate into the container and fill it with water. After about 10 months, you can pour it out onto a tray and let it dry.
To obtain charcoal, you can either purchase regular charcoal used for grilling or grind it into a fine powder. Alternatively, to make your own charcoal, place a layer of willow wood or another type of wood around 8 cm thick into a metal container. Then, position the container over a fire with the lid slightly open (to allow air to enter). Maintain the fire for 4-6 hours before opening the lid. The wood will have been converted into charcoal, which can then be used to make gunpowder.
Elemental sulfur is a naturally occurring substance commonly used to acidify soil, so it can be purchased at garden stores or online. It is naturally found in the earth and extracted from rock layers in places such as Texas, Louisiana, Italy, and other parts of the world.
Mix the ingredients together.
Grind the ingredients into a fine powder using a mortar and pestle. Grind each ingredient separately and clean the mortar and pestle between uses.
You may opt for a ball mill to grind the ingredients if you plan to produce a large quantity of gunpowder. A ball mill can safely grind and mix the ingredients simultaneously.
Measuring the components of gunpowder correctly is essential. Ensure that you follow the proper ratio of ingredients by calculating the percentage by weight, and use a small scale to weigh each component. The ingredients required are:
- 74.8% potassium nitrate
- 13.3% charcoal
- 11.9% sulfur
Mix the ingredients together. It is safest to moisten the ingredients before mixing, although this is not the only method. Place everything in a mortar, moisten it for safety, and use the pestle to grind the mixture for at least 10 minutes. If you're using a ball mill, grind the charcoal with sulfur for 4 hours, then add the potassium nitrate and continue grinding for another 24 hours.
- Be extra cautious when working with the black powder after mixing. Do not smoke or light fires in the vicinity of the gunpowder, and always keep it away from heat sources.
Consider adding water. Some people believe that adding 8% water can improve the gunpowder's combustion. Continue mixing the ingredients, adding water gradually until the mixture reaches a consistency similar to fine clay. Once mixed, knead it into small pellets.
- If you mix the gunpowder with water, you must break it into smaller pieces. Sift the mixture through a kitchen strainer to break it into smaller pieces, then dry the gunpowder on a sheet of paper.
- Always exercise caution when working with gunpowder. Be careful at every stage of the process.
Store the gunpowder safely. Place the gunpowder in a special container designed for storing it. Consider storing it in a fireproof box and keeping it in a shed or an area outside the house. Under all circumstances, always store the gunpowder in a safe place, away from fire or high temperatures.
- You can purchase gunpowder storage containers at hardware stores or online.
- Some people recommend using empty paint cans as storage for gunpowder.
- Be aware that laws in some areas may prohibit storing explosive materials in residential properties. If you are unsure about how or where gunpowder can be stored, contact your local authorities for guidance.
Advice
- The longer the gunpowder is ground, the more powerful the explosion will be. A general rule for all explosives is 'the finer the powder, the faster it burns.'
Warning
- Wear a mask
- Wear gloves
- Avoid smoking near gunpowder
- Wear thick fabric clothing
- Avoid using metal bowls and spoons (sparks may ignite the mixture)
- If you place the ball mill on a table, remove all nails and only use glue
- Do not use gunpowder to stuff into fireworks; this is illegal and highly dangerous
- To protect yourself, place sandbags around the mill so that any explosion will direct upwards
- Never operate the ball mill in a living area. The mill should only be used in a place with no people. Use fire hazard signs to warn others. You should install protective barriers to ensure that debris from a mill explosion does not harm anyone. Stay away from the mill while it is in operation
- Do not place bricks, stones, or metal near the mill as they may be ejected towards you during an explosion
- For ball mills, only use grinding agents that do not spark, such as lead balls
