Michelada with Tomato
-
1 squeezed lime
-
1 bottle or can of Mexican beer (Corona or other light beers), 350 ml
-
1/2 teaspoon of hot sauce (e.g., Tabasco), optional
-
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, Maggi seasoning, or soy sauce
-
90 ml Clamato (tomato and clam broth juice)
-
Salt (any type of coarse salt)
-
Ice cubes
Black Michelada
- 350 ml of Mexican dark beer
- Juice of one lime
- 2 ml of Worcestershire sauce
- 1 ml of soy sauce
- 1 ml of Tabasco sauce
- A pinch of black pepper
- Salt
Steps
Michelada with Tomato
Cut the lime in half. Place the lime on a cutting board and use a clean knife to cut it in half.
Use half a lime to rub the rim of the glass. The glass should be chilled beforehand so that the salt sticks to the rim.
Place the rim of the glass onto a tray of salt. Gently press the rim into the salt and rotate the glass to coat the edge evenly. Try to ensure that the salt sticks uniformly for a nice appearance.
- If you don't have a salt tray, use a small plate instead. This will also prevent you from wasting too much salt.
Fill the glass with ice cubes. While the glass is already chilled and you could drink the beer without ice, the ice will enhance the flavor and make the drink more refreshing.
Squeeze the remaining half lime into a manual citrus juicer and pour the lime juice over the ice. If you don't have a juicer, you can squeeze the lime manually and pour the juice over the ice. Be careful not to let any seeds fall into the glass.
Add the hot sauce and Clamato juice. Be careful not to overdo it, as these ingredients can be quite strong. If you have a sensitive palate, it's best to add just a few drops of Tabasco sauce to enhance the flavor.
Pour the beer into the glass. Pour the beer over ice cubes, lime juice, and sauce. If you prefer, you can use other types of Mexican beer. However, traditional tomato Michelada is typically made with light beer like Corona.
Stir thoroughly with a long spoon. If you don't stir, the ingredients won't mix properly, resulting in a less flavorful drink.
Black Michelada
Cut the lime into four wedges. Rub one-quarter of the lime around the rim of the glass so the salt can stick. Keep the remaining lime to squeeze for juice and use as garnish.
Coat the rim of the glass with salt. Prepare a small tray or plate with salt and invert the glass onto it. Slowly and carefully rotate the glass so the salt evenly sticks to the rim.
- If you notice any spot on the rim without salt, you can rub more lime juice on it. Wipe the rim with a napkin and start over (if you'd like your glass to look appealing and for the drink to taste perfect).
Prepare a bowl. Mix together the Tabasco sauce, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, lime juice, and black pepper.
- Slowly pour the beer into the bowl. Pour it gently to ensure the mixture blends well and the beer foams up. Then, stir thoroughly to combine all the ingredients.
Pour the mixture into the glass. Be careful not to spill it or lose the salt around the rim. Garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy your drink.
Done!
Tips
- You can mix chili powder with salt before applying it to the rim of the glass for an added spicy kick.
- Feel free to add Tequila to your Michelada cocktail for extra flavor.
- You can use two small limes (the smaller variety) instead of one medium-sized lemon.
- You can blend juice and sour elements with beer to create a beer cocktail. However, this is not a Michelada since it lacks Worcestershire sauce, Maggi seasoning, or soy sauce.
- You can add salt to the glass before pouring the beer in, but be cautious as the salt will cause the beer to foam up more.
- You can substitute or add chili powder for the hot sauce.
- In Puerto Vallarta, the traditional Michelada does not include hot sauce. It typically consists of ice, lime juice, and Mexican beer.
- Sometimes, a Michelada with hot sauce is referred to as a "Michelada Cubana" (though its connection to Cuba is still unclear).
Warning
- Drink responsibly
- The typical Worcestershire sauce may not be suitable for vegetarians, as it contains anchovies. You can find vegetarian-friendly Worcestershire sauce at natural food stores or use soy sauce as a substitute.
- Clamato juice is also not vegetarian-friendly, as it contains clam broth.
