Looking to earn money with little effort? Not exactly – but it's pretty close! Google Adsense presents a profit-sharing opportunity for websites of all sizes, big or small, when they place ads for products and services related to your website's content, targeting frequent visitors. In return, you earn a small amount when the ads are displayed or when someone clicks on them. Here, we’ll show you a few interesting ideas to help boost your Adsense earnings.
Steps
Create an ad unit

Name your ad unit. You can choose any name you like, but using a standardized format will make data management easier.
- For example, use a format like [target ad page]_[ad size]_[ad date], e.g., yourwebsite.com_336x280_080112. Whatever naming format you choose, it should adhere to the standard.

Choose the size. Refer to the "How to Do It" section below for more details. However, Google has identified best practices to help increase click-through rates.

Choose the ad format. This step determines the type of ads you will see on your website: text-only, text and images/multimedia, or image/multimedia-only ads.

Create custom channels. Custom channels allow you to group ad units by size and page location.
- You can track performance within custom channels and turn them into ad placements that advertisers specifically target.

Design ad styles. This step involves selecting colors for various ad elements: borders, headlines, backgrounds, text, and URLs. It lets you customize everything from sharp corners to rounded edges, fonts, and default text sizes.
- It’s best to create ad styles that match the look and feel of your website.
- You can use Google’s pre-set styles or customize your own. You’ll be able to preview the ad style on the right side of the screen.

Get the ad code. Once you've completed the setup, you can save the ad unit or click the Save and get code button at the bottom of the page to get the HTML code for your website.
- If you're unsure how to add the code to your site, click here for Google’s implementation guide.
Designing an Ad Campaign

Analyze your content. When creating an ad campaign, the most important step is to know your target audience. If you write a food blog for single men on a tight budget, you’ve already narrowed down the audience you're trying to attract. You need to understand the core of your ad message. When single men cook, what are they focusing on? It might be: dating, cars, movies, politics, or live music.
- Think about the regular visitors of your website, what traits of your audience do you consider most important?

Refine your ads. Although AdSense will automatically place relevant ads on your website, you can use available tools to have greater control over the ads.
- Set up channels. Channels act as labels to group ad units by color, category, or page. Once you’ve set up channels, you can view detailed performance reports for your ad units and leverage that data. For example:
- Use one ad style for this group of pages and another for a different group. Track and compare performance between the two styles and choose the one that performs best.
- Compare performance across different content pages. For example, if a gardening page performs better than a cooking page, consider adding more ads to the gardening page.
- If you have separate domains, set up channels to track individual pages and determine which one receives the most clicks.

What’s valuable?

Adjust your expectations realistically. When you sign up for AdSense, you’ll want to know what kind of profits you’ll receive. You’ll earn income in various forms, and if you manage these well, you can optimize your earning potential.

Website Traffic. First and foremost, in order to make any money through AdSense, you need people to click on your ads. To get there, you must have visitors coming to your site, reading your content! Whether it's a business website or a personal blog, the rule remains the same: You must speak up!
- Websites with high traffic can reach over 1 million visits per day, while blogs may have around 100 visitors per day.
- For every 1,000 impressions (views), you could earn anywhere from 10,000 to 100,000 VND. Yes, that’s a wide range – monthly earnings could vary from 30,000 to 3 million VND. How much you make depends entirely on you, your website, and your advertising efforts.

Cost Per Click (CPC). Each time someone clicks on an ad on your site, you get paid. However, you cannot click on your own ads, as Google will catch it. Advertisers set the price for their ads, and the costs can vary significantly.
- Advertisers might pay a lot for each click, but that doesn’t mean it will drive traffic to your site.
- Some ads might cost 0.03 USD per click, and while they may attract 100 clicks, it doesn’t generate much revenue.

Click-Through Rate (CTR). This is the ratio of visitors to your website who click on an ad. For example, if 100 people visit your website and only 1 clicks on an ad, the CTR is 1%. This isn’t an unreasonable figure. If your site gets a lot of traffic, the difference in results will be significant.

Revenue Per 1,000 Impressions (RPM). This is the estimated revenue you earn for every 1,000 impressions (page views).
- For instance, if you earn 10,000 VND per 100 views, the RPM would be 200,000 VND. While there’s no guarantee you’ll achieve this, it’s an effective way to track your site’s overall performance.

Content is Key. The quality of your content is the determining factor for your earning potential. If your website offers rich, persuasive content that provides users with an excellent experience, it will attract more visitors. Google’s crawlers will easily identify the most relevant ads for your site. Engaged users + targeted ads = money.

Start building a keyword-rich website. Plant the seeds with carefully researched, profitable keywords and create high-quality backlinks to your website.
- If your website focuses on topics like debt consolidation, web hosting, or cancer related to asbestos, it will be difficult to attract readers. Consider more relatable topics like pets, food, etc.
- If you only focus on high-paying keywords, you’ll face fierce competition. You need to find keywords where "supply is less than demand"—make sure to research your keywords before setting up the website.
Advice
- While Google doesn’t exactly reveal how they determine which ads appear on which pages, they have mentioned that the decision is based on the content of the page, not the meta tags.
- Avoid using non-English characters on English pages. There’s a bug that can cause these pages to display irrelevant French ads.
- Quality is the most important aspect of any website. If your site doesn’t provide content that meets the needs of visitors, they’re unlikely to return.
- Some webmasters create entirely new websites just for serving AdSense text ads, but doing so violates AdSense policies. You should add some affiliate links or sell products on your site instead.
- You can use traffic-boosting websites like Flixya. You can register for Google AdSense and Flixya without any fees or the time investment of building a separate website.
Warnings
- Never click on your own ads. If Google catches you, your account could be suspended and your earnings forfeited. However, if you accidentally click once or twice, Google will treat it as a normal click and won’t penalize you, as long as it doesn’t happen frequently.
- In the past, you might have seen messages on websites encouraging people to click on ads. Those days are long gone. If Google detects fraud, you won’t be able to explain it away. They’ll conclude that you’re guilty.
- Google has strict ad display limitations. A common reason for account suspension is webmasters attempting to obscure ads to mislead others into thinking they are "content" on the page. Never use CSS to hide the Google logo unless you are authorized to do so.
- If your website lacks content, Google will have to guess what your site is about. If they guess incorrectly, the ads displayed may not be relevant to your content.
