These golden-brown, light, and flaky biscuits are the perfect side dish for an American-style dinner or a picnic. The best part is that they only require a few simple ingredients and an easy preparation process, meaning you can make them at home in no time. Using basic ingredients, you'll have a batch of delicious biscuits in under 30 minutes. If you use ready-made biscuit mix, you can save an extra 10 minutes.

From pre-made biscuit mix
- 2 1/4 cups biscuit mix (such as Bisquick, etc.)
- 2/3 cup milk
Steps
Making biscuits with basic ingredients

Preheat the oven to 475ºF (246ºC). This recipe uses a high baking temperature to shorten the cooking time. While the oven is heating up, you can carry out the next steps to save time.
Prepare the baking tray, if desired. This recipe doesn't require the tray to be greased or non-stick in any way. However, if you'd like to coat the tray with vegetable shortening or spray with non-stick cooking spray, it won't affect the outcome. This can also be a good idea if you've had trouble with the biscuits sticking to the tray in the past.
- You can also opt to use parchment paper or lightly dust the tray with flour.
Mix the dry ingredients. Pour the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar into a large bowl. Stir the ingredients together thoroughly.
Mix the wet ingredients. Measure out the oil and pour it into a separate bowl. Then, measure the milk and add it to the oil without stirring or mixing. Pour this mixture into the bowl with the dry ingredients.
Combine the ingredients into dough. Using your hands or a dough mixing tool, gently mix the wet and dry ingredients together. Transfer the dough to a floured surface (such as a kitchen counter) and knead it once or twice to form a ball of dough.
- Don't overwork the dough, as it may lose its light and fluffy texture. Stop mixing once the dry ingredients are mostly moistened and sticky—it's okay if there are a few small clumps of flour left. Remember to knead the dough just once or twice.
Roll out the dough. At this point, you can choose the thickness of your biscuits. While the dough is still on the floured surface, roll it out to a thickness of about 1.5 – 2 cm. You can use a rolling pin or your hands, as long as the dough is evenly flattened.
- To avoid a mess, you can place the dough between two sheets of plastic wrap before rolling it out.
Cut the biscuits into 5 cm rounds. Use a round biscuit cutter with a 5 cm diameter to cut the flattened dough into individual biscuits. Dust the cutter with flour to prevent sticking. Place the cut biscuits on the baking tray, leaving at least 2.5 cm of space between each biscuit to ensure even baking.
- Once all the dough is cut, you can roll the leftover dough into a ball, flatten it, and continue cutting more biscuits.
Bake until the biscuits turn light brown. This usually takes about 10-12 minutes. However, since you're using a high temperature, it's a good idea to check after about 8 minutes to avoid over-baking.
- Once you've carefully removed the baking tray from the oven, let the biscuits cool for about 5 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack. Enjoy the biscuits while they're still warm or after they've cooled.
Making biscuits from pre-made mix

If in doubt, follow the instructions on the box. Most pre-made biscuit mixes (like Bisquick, Krusteaz, etc.) are fairly similar, so these instructions are usually suitable. However, if you notice a significant difference between the instructions provided here and those on the packaging, follow the package instructions for the best results. The guidance here is for a general recipe and may not apply in every case.

Preheat the oven to 450ºF (232ºC). With the recipe above, you don't need to grease the tray or prepare it in any special way, but feel free to grease it if you prefer. Proceed with the next steps while the oven is heating up.
Tips
- Both of the above recipes freeze very well. To freeze the biscuits, line a baking tray with parchment paper before mixing the dough. Then, cut the dough into individual biscuits, place them on the tray, and freeze. Be sure to arrange the biscuits evenly on the tray. Once frozen, transfer them to a sealed bag and store them in the freezer. The biscuits can be stored this way for months. When baking frozen biscuits, you will need to add a few extra minutes to the baking time.
- Use just enough milk to make the dough soft and sticky. If you add too much milk, the dough will become too runny and will not hold its shape when cut into biscuits. In this case, simply drop spoonfuls of dough onto the tray. The texture will be slightly different, but still very tasty.
- Biscuits are delicious on their own, but they taste even better when paired with a topping. Check out our gravy recipe to learn how to make this classic topping at home. Butter and jam are also great biscuit accompaniments.
