Is your child into reading? Do you want to spark their interest in books? This article will guide you on how to lead a child towards a love for reading.
Steps

Find the right books for your child.
- Ask your child what they like to read. Buy books in that genre for them.
- If your child doesn’t know what they like, visit a library and ask the librarian for assistance. Many public libraries have librarians who specialize in helping children discover books that match their interests.
- Be open-minded about the types of books your child enjoys. Even if it’s not your favorite genre, it will help foster a love for reading in your child.
- If your child is young, they might want to read the same book over and over. This is completely normal. Over time, they will branch out to new books, but for now, let them enjoy what they want.

Read books aloud to your child. You might think that reading to them will make them lose interest in reading on their own, but it actually makes them love books more. It also associates reading with a fun time spent with you.

Prioritize reading over other forms of electronic entertainment.
- Encourage your child to read books for information instead of searching on Google. Reading print books is also better for their eyes than using electronic devices.
- If your child spends two hours watching movies or shows, have them read books for two hours instead, or they won't be allowed to watch TV that day.
- Make weekends 'TV-free days.' Since your child isn’t in school, unplug the TV and computer, and encourage them to read or go outside to play.
- Once a month, limit your child’s screen time by not allowing TV, computer, or video games for one week. Encourage them to read as much as possible during that time.

Start a book club! Invite neighborhood kids over to read together.

Buy your child an e-reader like Kindle or Nook! It’s similar to reading on a computer and/or TV.

Let your child see you reading books. Young children often mimic their parents' behaviors, and reading books is no exception!
Advice
- Give your child some time.
- Don’t rush or pressure them into reading; otherwise, they might feel annoyed and pretend to read just to finish, or avoid reading altogether.
Warning
- Don’t get angry at your child if they don’t enjoy reading books.
