Pubic hair can be a sensitive topic, but it's important to know how to handle it. Cleanse with a mild soap free from fragrances, remove hair by shaving or waxing, or let it grow naturally. Finally, consider issues such as skin irritation, ingrown hairs, and how to address them.
Steps
Keep your pubic hair clean and tidy

Wash pubic hair with a mild soap. Just as your head hair requires washing, pubic hair also deserves attention and care. During your shower, use a gentle soap without added fragrances to clean your pubic area. Be gentle to avoid pulling the hair and causing pain.
- Regular bath soap and shampoo are too alkaline for sensitive skin and should not be used near the pubic area. Opt for fragrance-free soap bars designed specifically for this area. Never apply soap directly to the hair; lather it in your hands first.
- Be very cautious to avoid soap getting inside the genital area, as it could cause irritation or itching. This is particularly important for women, as even the mildest soap can disrupt the pH balance of the vagina and lead to infections or inflammation.

Trimming Pubic Hair. Even if you're not in the habit of trimming your pubic hair, it's still a good idea to keep it neat and tidy. The best way to do this is by trimming, and the most common tool for the job is a small nail scissors, ideally with rounded tips. Rounded-tip scissors help you handle the task more easily and minimize the risk of cutting the skin. Keep this pair of scissors stored separately for exclusive use in trimming your pubic hair.
- Do not use larger scissors, as they are harder to handle and may cause injury. If you don't have small nail scissors, you could use an ear or nose hair trimmer, but make sure it has a guard around the blade to avoid cutting the skin. Never use an electric razor with a rotating head, as they can be painful when used in the pubic area.
- When trimming pubic hair, pull it straight out and trim gradually, cutting close to the skin until you feel comfortable. If you prefer, you can run a comb through the hair first, then trim the strands that extend beyond the comb's teeth. During the process, you should feel to gauge your progress, but occasionally check with a handheld mirror.
- Make sure to clean up the hair on the floor after trimming, as leaving it scattered around the bathroom (especially in shared spaces) can be embarrassing if others notice. If possible, trim over the toilet to easily flush the hair away when you're done. Many believe trimming is the best way to tidy up pubic hair.
Hair Removal

Shaving. Shaving is probably the most common way to remove pubic hair, as it's inexpensive, easy to do, relatively painless, and can be done privately. You'll need shaving cream or gel with a mild alkaline formula, free of fragrances (both men and women should use women's products, as they're the mildest), preferably one designed for pubic hair, and a new razor (dull razors are less effective and can irritate the skin).
- Start by trimming the area you want to shave, either around the bikini line or underwear edges, or trim and remove all the pubic hair. Shaving works best on short hair and is less likely to tug or irritate the skin, so aim to trim to about 0.6cm.
- Soften the hair with warm water for 3-5 minutes before shaving. Alternatively, you can apply a warm compress to the area for a similar effect. Apply shaving cream to the area, avoiding the genital area. It’s better to test the cream on a small patch of skin 24 hours before shaving, as some products may cause allergic reactions.
- Stretch the skin around the pubic area with your free hand, as shaving works best on smooth surfaces. Begin shaving but don't press down hard (if you need to, the razor is too dull). Shaving upward (against the hair growth) gives the closest shave, while shaving downward (with the hair growth) may reduce irritation for sensitive skin and minimize the risk of ingrown hairs.
- After shaving the desired amount, rinse the area with warm water to remove the cream, pat dry with a towel, and apply soothing lotion to calm the skin and reduce irritation.

Using Hair Removal Cream. Hair removal creams are a good option for those who only want to clean up the area around the bikini line or underwear, as they cause minimal pain. These creams work by using strong chemicals that dissolve the hair, making it easy to wipe off.
- Due to the strong chemical properties (evidenced by their strong odor), it's not recommended to use hair removal cream on the entire pubic area, as it may irritate the skin or even cause chemical burns. It's best to use these creams to remove hair outside the bikini line or underwear.
- Before applying the cream, trim the hair you want to remove. This will reduce the amount of cream that comes into contact with areas of your clothing where you don’t need it. Use a pair of underwear as a guide for where to apply the cream, ensuring it doesn't get on sensitive skin.
- Leave the cream on for the recommended time stated on the packaging. Never leave it on longer than directed, as it can be toxic to the skin. Once the time is up, wipe or wash off the cream, and the unwanted hair will come off along with it.

Hair Removal. Hair removal is a highly effective way to eliminate unwanted hair, with results lasting 2-4 weeks. There are various methods for hair removal: removing hair from outside the bikini line, extending the removal to include more area, or leaving a strip in the middle, or removing all the hair (Brazilian wax). Men also use similar methods, but hair removal from sensitive areas such as the scrotum should be avoided.
- Hair removal is done by applying hot wax to the area where the hair is to be removed. Then, a cloth is placed over the wax, and after a quick pull, both the cloth and the wax come off, taking the hair with it.
- Since the hair is pulled out from the roots, it takes longer to grow back compared to other hair removal methods like shaving, which only removes hair from the surface. However, hair removal can be expensive, making it a costly choice despite its longer-lasting results.
- There are home waxing kits available, but if you’ve never tried waxing before, it’s better to visit a salon. Keep in mind that waxing can be painful, especially in sensitive areas, but over time, hair will grow back less between sessions, and the pain will lessen as well.

Consider Electrolysis or Laser Methods. Electrolysis and laser hair removal are two techniques that can permanently remove or reduce pubic hair. Electrolysis is a method that completely and permanently removes hair. The technique involves sending an electric current through the hair follicle, destroying the hair root and preventing it from regrowing.
- You only need to undergo one treatment (which may last from 2-12 hours, depending on the amount of hair) and never have to worry about hair again! However, electrolysis can be quite painful (though not as painful as waxing) and expensive.
- Laser hair removal is a newer technique that guarantees reduced hair growth permanently. This method involves emitting pulses of light at pigmented hair follicles, preventing further hair growth. The procedure is relatively painless and takes only a few minutes, but multiple treatments are required.
- Although laser hair removal effectively reduces hair, it does not guarantee complete removal, and you may still need to use other hair removal methods. The laser targets dark hair follicles, so it’s not effective for lighter-colored hair. Laser hair removal is also expensive.

Consider Letting Hair Grow Naturally. It's important to understand that the decision to remove hair is a personal choice. Today, shaving "down there" has become increasingly common, but you should not feel pressured to remove pubic hair if it makes you uncomfortable.
- As long as the pubic area is kept clean and tidy, there’s no significant hygienic reason to remove pubic hair. Most people opt for hair removal for cosmetic reasons.
- Furthermore, many men and women still choose the natural path of allowing their hair to grow freely. Therefore, whatever method you choose, letting hair grow is perfectly normal!
Dealing with Other Issues

Soothing Skin Irritation. Skin irritation is a part of the hair removal process, and no matter what method you choose, you will almost certainly experience skin irritation, especially during the first hair removal session. To minimize the discomfort of redness, try the following:
- Use an exfoliating scrub. This product will remove dead skin cells and allow your skin to breathe. If you don’t have exfoliating scrub, you can mix baking soda and water, which has a similar effect.
- Moisturize the skin with a light, fragrance-free body oil. Baby oils and moisturizers containing aloe vera extracts are common choices for soothing the skin.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing. Your skin needs air to recover, so avoid wearing tight leather pants right after waxing your intimate areas. Try to wear cotton underwear and loose skirts or pants for a day or two after hair removal.

Dealing with Ingrown Hair. Ingrown hairs can be painful and may lead to infection if not properly addressed. They usually appear as hair regrows after shaving or waxing. If you have ingrown hairs in your pubic area, you can handle them as follows:
- Take a warm shower to soften the skin around the hair and help open the pores. Dry off with a clean towel, then use a sanitized pair of tweezers to gently lift the hair from the skin and pull it out.
- Apply an astringent to the area and allow it to dry. Then, wear loose cotton underwear. Continue applying the astringent daily until the skin heals.

Coloring Pubic Hair. If you're experiencing early graying of pubic hair, don't worry. While it's not medically recommended, you can still color your pubic hair at home with dye purchased from a store. It is especially important to follow safety precautions to avoid dye coming into contact with sensitive genital areas.
- Choose a color that closely matches your natural hair. Pubic hair is typically darker than head hair, so if you regularly use hair dye, opt for a darker shade. The Root Touch-up kit is a good option for coloring pubic hair as it provides the right amount of color and includes a small brush for easier application.
- Before dyeing, do a patch test to ensure you're not allergic to the dye. Then, apply pure petroleum jelly to any sensitive areas of the genital region where you don't want the dye to touch.
- Carefully apply the dye as instructed on the packaging and leave it on for the required amount of time. Rinse the dye off with warm water, then use a sponge or washcloth to remove any excess petroleum jelly.
Advice
- After waking up in the morning, wait 20-30 minutes before shaving, as water tends to accumulate under the skin overnight, causing puffiness. Shaving is easier when the skin is taut, so it's best to wait until the puffiness subsides.
- If you're not ready, there's no need to trim your hair.
Warnings
- Essential oils for newborns are great for soothing irritated skin, but they can weaken natural latex condoms, so it is advised not to use this product prior to sexual intercourse.
