Constipation is a common condition affecting people of all ages. Those who suffer from constipation often experience infrequent bowel movements, such as having one every three days, or they may pass hard, dry stools that are difficult or painful to expel. While constipation is typically not dangerous, most individuals experience it for only a short period of time.
Steps to Take
Massage Your Stomach to Alleviate Constipation

Understand the Benefits of Stomach Massage. When dealing with constipation, you may feel discomfort or even pain. Stomach massage not only helps relieve constipation but also offers other benefits, such as:
- Reducing the need for long-term laxative use.
- Relieving bloating.
- Decreasing the chances of turning to medical treatments for constipation.
- Helping you relax and loosen up your muscles, making it easier to have a bowel movement.

Find a Comfortable Spot for Your Massage. You can lie down while massaging your stomach. Lying down helps you relax more and makes it easier to massage compared to standing. Set aside at least 30 minutes to prepare and perform the massage. Rushing can increase tension and may reduce the effectiveness of the constipation relief.
- Self-massage your stomach in a comfortable and quiet place, such as your bedroom. Turn off the lights and minimize noise for a more relaxing experience.
- Consider lying in a warm bath. The warm water helps you relax, which can also alleviate constipation.

Start the Stomach Massage. Your intestines are located between your hip bones in the lower abdomen. You can massage your stomach in any motion or style you prefer, but typically, circular movements are more effective for relieving constipation.
- Use your index fingers to massage the small intestine with clockwise circular motions around the belly button. Repeat the circular motion 3-5 times.

Continue the Massage Sequence. This helps the waste move down the intestines. Continue the following movements:
- Stroke the stomach from left to right.
- Massage around the belly button with your palms and fingers.
- Use one hand to make a circular motion below the belly button, then quickly follow with the other hand making a circle.
- Place one hand over the other and massage in a counterclockwise direction.
- Use your fingertips to make small circular motions.
- Massage from both sides of the abdomen towards the center and down.

Repeat the Massage Motion. You should massage your stomach for 10-20 minutes to stimulate the intestines. Continue the sequence for 10-20 minutes, then pause. Take a moment to check if you feel the urge to go to the bathroom. If not, try massaging again or wait a bit longer.
- Avoid pressing too hard or rubbing too vigorously. Such motions may cause the stool to become compressed, making it harder to expel.
- Continue stomach massages daily to reduce constipation, even if you need to use other methods to go to the bathroom. A daily stomach massage routine can prevent future episodes of constipation or bloating.

Move Your Legs. Bringing your knees towards your stomach will apply pressure to your intestines. You can alternate folding each knee towards your stomach or to the sides while massaging your stomach. This movement can stimulate the intestines and reduce constipation.

Don't ignore the urge to go to the bathroom. It's important not to hold it in or ignore the feeling of needing to go. If you're in a massage session, head to the restroom and take care of it. Otherwise, you may face issues like:
- Hard stools
- Straining during bowel movements
- Hemorrhoids
- Pain
Combine massage with other natural remedies

Drink plenty of water. Constipation is often linked to dehydration in the colon. Aim to drink 8 cups of 240 ml of water daily (about 2 liters) to stay hydrated and reduce constipation.
- Stick to tap or bottled water. Avoid sugary drinks or flavored water, as they may cause bloating and gas.

Try fruit juice. If water isn't helping with constipation, you might want to try fruit juice. Drink 60–120 ml of prune or apple juice with meals. You may need to increase the amount if you don't see results.
- If the juice is too strong, dilute it with an equal amount of water, or enjoy it with ice cubes if preferred.

Eat fiber-rich foods. In addition to drinking water and/or fruit juice, you should incorporate more fiber-rich foods into your diet. These can soften stools and stimulate bowel movements. Aim for 14 g of fiber per 1,000 calories consumed. Here are some high-fiber foods that may help with constipation, especially when paired with massage:
- Beans
- Dried plums
- Pears
- Plums
- Peaches
- Broccoli
- Lentils
- Brussels sprouts
- Flaxseeds
- Carrots
- Pineapple
- Whole grains
- Oat bran

Engage in Physical Activity. Physical movement and exercise can stimulate the digestive system. Try light exercises to help alleviate constipation. Consider combining them with abdominal massage to speed up relief from constipation.
- Look for exercises that are effective for relieving constipation. However, it's best to choose gentle workouts. Walking, jogging, cycling, and swimming are great options. Yoga can also assist in alleviating constipation.
- Push yourself to be active as much as possible. Even 15 minutes of exercise can help stimulate the intestines.

Be Cautious with Mineral Oils, Laxatives, and Enemas. There are varying opinions on the use of natural oils, laxatives, and enemas for treating constipation. These treatments may cause chronic constipation, damage the muscles of the colon and anus, and can lead to dependency on laxatives. It is advisable to consult a doctor to determine whether any of these methods are safe and suitable for you.

Use Castor Oil. A home remedy that has been used for years, castor oil serves as a natural laxative. It breaks down into a substance that stimulates the intestines, helping to relieve constipation. Combining castor oil with abdominal massage can provide quicker relief.
- Take 1–2 teaspoons of castor oil on an empty stomach. This should help you have a bowel movement within 8 hours.
- Mix the castor oil with a sweet substance like sugar or orange juice to mask its unpleasant taste.
- Avoid exceeding the recommended dose of castor oil. Overdosing may lead to symptoms such as stomach cramps, chest pain, dizziness, hallucinations, diarrhea, rapid breathing, skin rashes, and throat tightness. If you experience any of these, contact a poison control center immediately. In the U.S., you can call the National Poison Control Hotline at 1-800-222-1222 for guidance.

Incorporate Psyllium Husk into Your Diet. Adding fiber supplements to your diet can enhance the effectiveness of abdominal massage therapy. Psyllium husk is made from tiny pieces of plantain seeds and is a fiber supplement that softens stool. Consider adding psyllium husks, sold under brand names like Metamucil, FiberCon, and Citrucel, to your diet to relieve constipation.
- Psyllium husk can be found at nutrition and health food stores.
- Mix ½ teaspoon of psyllium husk with 240 ml of water and drink it. You can take it in the morning or evening. Only increase the dosage if necessary.
- Add psyllium husks to fruit smoothies if you prefer. Fruit can complement the effects of psyllium husks and abdominal massage.

Use Flax Seeds to Stimulate Your Digestive System. Flax seeds, flax seed oil, and ground flaxseed can help relieve constipation. These foods also replenish nutrients lost due to constipation. Incorporate flax seed products into your meals throughout the day to promote digestive health. Avoid consuming more than 50g (or 5 tablespoons) of flax seeds daily. You can add flax seeds in the following ways:
- Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed over hot or cold breakfast cereal.
- Mix 1 teaspoon of ground flaxseed with mayonnaise or mustard and spread it on a sandwich.
- Stir 1 teaspoon of ground flaxseed into 240 ml of yogurt.
- Use ground flaxseed in baked goods such as cookies, bread, and muffins.
Warning
- If you experience persistent constipation, consult a doctor.
- If you're suffering from severe abdominal pain, seek emergency care immediately.
- Visit a doctor promptly if you have diarrhea accompanied by abdominal pain.
