Vibrant shades like gold or copper red in your hair are something many of us desire to keep year-round. If the thought of using chemical dyes to maintain these hues bothers you, consider trying natural methods. There are several ways to brighten your hair, giving it a beautiful golden or red glow.
Steps
Lighten All Hair Colors

Go Outdoors. There's a reason why people's hair turns golden and radiant during summer—sunlight! The sun naturally bleaches hair while giving skin a tan. Wait for a sunny day and let the sun work its magic on your hair. Just remember to apply sunscreen to protect your skin from sunburn during the process.

Go Swimming. Since spending time in the sun and swimming outdoors often go hand in hand, it can be hard to distinguish between the processes of natural hair lightening. However, sunlight isn't the only factor; salt and chlorine in the ocean and pools can also lighten your hair color (your natural hair color). Go for a dive in a nearby bay, and your hair will brighten in no time.
- If your hair is dyed, chlorine in pool water may cause the color to fade.

Rinse with Vinegar. The recent 'no-poo' trend, which involves washing hair without shampoo, has helped many discover that vinegar can lighten hair. While showering, rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar. Doing this regularly will gradually lighten your hair over time.

Use Baking Soda. Like vinegar, baking soda is another 'no-poo' alternative to chemical shampoos that can also help lighten your hair. When you shower, sprinkle baking soda onto your hair and massage it gently. The sticky mixture will naturally bleach your hair.

Apply a Honey Mask to Your Hair. Want honey-colored hair? Use the real thing to make a mask. Mix honey with a bit of distilled water and apply it to your hair. Let it soak for 30 minutes or more. When honey is combined with distilled water, a chemical reaction takes place that helps your hair brighten very quickly. To double the effect, go outside and sit in the sun while applying the hair mask.
- Rinse your hair with shampoo after this treatment to remove any leftover honey.

Use Vitamin C. Not only is vitamin C essential for daily health, but it can also help lighten your hair color. Purchase a bottle of vitamin C tablets, but use them for your hair, not for consumption. Crush 5-10 tablets (depending on the length and thickness of your hair) and mix the powder into your shampoo. Washing your hair with this mixture provides a nourishing bleach treatment for your hair.

Try Using Hydrogen Peroxide. While it's not the most natural hair dye method, hydrogen peroxide is an easy at-home option to lighten your hair without many products. Rinse your hair with hydrogen peroxide, leave it for about 10-15 minutes, then wash it out with water. Test this method on a small section of hair first to ensure you're satisfied with the color it gives.
- Hydrogen peroxide can dry out your hair. To avoid damage, apply a deep conditioning hair mask after using this method.

Brew Some Black Tea. Black tea is beneficial in many beauty routines, as it contains tannic acid that can gradually highlight your hair over time. Brew a few cups of strong black tea (using several tea bags or spoons of loose tea) and pour it over your hair. Let it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
Create Golden Highlights

Spray Lemon Juice on Your Hair. Used by many women for hundreds of years to achieve bright, radiant hair, lemon juice is one of the most ancient and effective natural lightening methods. Pour lemon juice into a spray bottle and apply it all over your hair. Let it dry for 20 minutes before rinsing it out.
- Lemon juice can dry out your hair with frequent use, so mix it with some oil to keep your hair soft.

Brew a Cup of Coffee. If you have brown hair, brew a very strong cup of coffee. Let it cool completely, refrigerating it if needed. Pour the cooled coffee into a spray bottle and spray it all over your hair. Sit outside for about 30 minutes. This method won't lighten your entire hair, but it will brighten your natural highlights.

Try Beetroot Juice. If you've ever cooked with beetroot, you know how staining its juice can be. Create a natural red tint in your hair by letting beetroot juice work its magic. Dilute it with a little distilled water, then apply the mixture to your hair. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

Make a Cinnamon Mask. Brew some hot cinnamon tea using real cinnamon for a fantastic way to reveal a subtle caramel color in your hair. Mix a few cinnamon sticks or 1-2 tablespoons of cinnamon with a few cups of water (more or less depending on your hair's length and thickness). Apply it to your hair and let it sit for a while before rinsing.

Dye Your Hair with Henna. This tip is almost a 'cheat,' as henna has long been used as a natural dye for both hair and skin. Mix henna with water (or tea, which enhances the lightening effect!) to create a paste, then apply it to your hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap and let the henna sit— the longer you wait, the redder your hair will become. Rinse with water as usual, and you'll be amazed by your sweet ginger-colored hair!
Tips
- If you're unsure about the color that will emerge when naturally lightening your hair, start by testing it on a small section (rather than applying it all at once). If you don't like the color that results, it's not a big deal as you only treated a small section of your hair.
