Entering a psychiatric hospital for psychological treatment is uncommon. Most patients stay only 24 to 72 hours for monitoring. In severe cases, the treatment process may be extended. If there is a risk of harm to oneself or others, patients may be held without consent. Some choose to be hospitalized for intensive treatment of serious mental health issues. Regardless of the reason, time spent in a psychiatric hospital can be quite challenging. To cope with this, it's essential to understand the rules and regulations before entering and to have a clear plan for your stay.
Steps
Interacting with Others

Avoid Conflict. Patients are admitted for various reasons. It’s important to remember that some individuals may be easily agitated and prone to violent behavior. To ensure your safety, avoid conflict, especially with strangers. The hospital staff is always present to prevent violence. You should follow their instructions and report any potential issues.
- If another patient intentionally provokes you and ignoring them isn’t an option, inform the staff and request to be moved to another area.

Make Friends. This step might not be necessary if you are only staying for one or two nights. However, if you are there for a few weeks, you may consider making friends with others. Some hospitals limit phone use and visitor access. Friends within the hospital can help alleviate feelings of loneliness during your stay. Making friends can even support faster recovery and enhance your mental health.

Establish and Maintain Healthy Boundaries. Remember, everyone in the hospital is dealing with mental health issues. Some people may lack boundaries, so setting your own is crucial.
- Consider whether or not you want to lend personal items. If not, kindly refuse if someone asks to borrow something. Do not allow others to pressure you into lending your belongings.
- Do not ignore violent actions or inappropriate behavior from others. If someone behaves disrespectfully, ask them to stop. If they continue, remove yourself from the situation and notify staff.
Follow Your Treatment Plan

Understand the Treatment Plan and Goals. You need to be aware of the treatment activities to stay focused on your recovery and discharge. Ask your doctor about discharge conditions, recovery progress, and what actions are necessary.
- Understand your diagnosis and the symptoms you are currently experiencing.
- Be aware of the treatment goals and the expected behavioral outcomes.
- Know the types of treatments being used to achieve recovery goals: individual therapy, group counseling, family therapy, and/or medication.

Attend Treatment Sessions. Participate in all treatment methods. Some treatments are individual, but you should also regularly join group therapy sessions. Psychotherapy has the potential to improve mood, provide inspiration, and reduce anxiety.
- Active participation in therapy demonstrates your desire to improve your mental health and your commitment to following the treatment plan for early discharge.

Follow the Rules. There are many rules you need to learn and follow. These include meal times and locations, recreational activities, participation in treatments like therapy, medication times and locations, phone usage, physical contact with others, and the visiting hours and places for family. Failing to follow these regulations can result in a longer stay and being placed under stricter rules.
- If you disagree with the medication prescribed by your doctor, talk to them about your concerns. The doctor will be willing to offer alternative treatment options rather than simply refusing your request.
Make the Most of Your Treatment Time

Exercise to Improve Your Physical and Mental Health. Use the time away from friends and family to focus on improving your body. Exercise can boost your mood and help you feel less confined during your hospital stay.
- You can exercise in the hospital's outdoor area. If the hospital doesn't have a yard or gym, ask the staff to guide you to a suitable location for exercise.

Read Books. Reading novels has a positive effect on brain health and can be inspiring. You may develop a healthy reading habit after being discharged.
- Reading self-improvement books can be a great choice under certain circumstances and can enhance your mood.

Develop New Skills or Hobbies. Some hospitals offer classes or activities like handicrafts. You can take advantage of this opportunity to learn new skills or develop a new hobby. Spending time doing enjoyable activities can make you feel more comfortable during your stay in the hospital.
- If the hospital doesn't offer classes or activities, you can request materials and guides for various crafts.
Advice
- Don't be afraid or hesitate to seek support if you feel your safety is at risk.
- If you need someone to talk to, request additional treatment.
- Always follow the instructions given by the staff.
- Not all psychiatric hospitals are the same. Some have stricter rules than others.
Warnings
- Make sure you fully understand the treatment process and give your consent when necessary.
- Never attempt to leave the hospital. Doing so may result in a reevaluation and could extend your stay. Some insurance companies may refuse to cover the costs if you leave prematurely.
- If you feel that you may harm yourself or others, immediately notify the staff.
- Always take the medication prescribed by your doctor. Consult your doctor before discontinuing any medication.
