Castor oil has been used for years to treat hair loss and thinning. In addition, it provides several other benefits such as moisturizing dry hair, repairing damaged strands, and smoothing out tangled locks. This oil also helps to make your hair stronger and thicker. However, using castor oil isn't as simple as just applying it to your hair. You also need to prepare it properly before application to ensure the best results. Take the time to get the oil ready and apply it the right way for optimal outcomes.
Steps
Preparing the Oil

Gather your materials. While applying castor oil to your hair may seem straightforward, there are a few steps you need to follow to ensure smooth and effective application. Here's a list of what you'll need:
- Castor oil
- Another type of oil (argan oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, etc.)
- Hot water
- Bowl
- Container
- Shower cap
- Towel
- Old clothes (recommended)

Dilute castor oil with another type of oil. Castor oil has a relatively thick consistency. Mixing it with another oil will make the application easier. Try combining equal parts of castor oil and another oil like argan, avocado, coconut, jojoba, or sweet almond oil. All of these oils are great for hair. Here's an example combination you can try:
- 3 tablespoons (45ml) castor oil
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) jojoba oil
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) coconut oil

Add a few drops of essential oil for fragrance. Castor oil can have a strong smell. If this bothers you, try adding 2-3 drops of a pleasant essential oil like rosemary, peppermint, or tea tree oil.

Pour the entire mixture into a small container and shake well. Be sure to seal the container tightly and shake for a few minutes. Once shaken, open the container and you're ready to use it.

Fill a bowl with hot water. You can create a 'hot oil treatment' by warming the castor oil in hot water before use. This warming process enhances the oil’s effectiveness and makes it easier to apply. Choose a bowl large enough to submerge the oil container. Just be sure not to use the microwave to heat the oil.

Place the oil container into the bowl of water and let it sit for 2-4 minutes. Ensure the water level rises to the same height as the oil inside the container. Also, make sure no water enters the container, as this could dilute the oil.

Pour the warmed oil into a small bowl. This method makes it easier to apply the oil with your fingers when needed.
- You can also pour the oil into a dropper bottle. This will make it more convenient to apply the oil directly to your scalp.
- If you don’t have a dropper bottle, you can use a bottle with a pointed tip. Most beauty supply stores carry these empty bottles.
Applying Castor Oil

Wet your hair if you prefer. While you can apply castor oil to dry hair, wetting your hair first helps the oil penetrate deeper. A quick way to wet your hair is by filling a spray bottle with water and lightly spritzing your scalp. Your hair should be damp, not soaking wet.

Wrap a towel around your shoulders. This will protect your clothes from any oil spills. Alternatively, you can wear an old shirt to safeguard against any oil drips, so you don't have to worry about staining your favorite clothes.

Dip your fingers into the oil and massage your scalp for about 3-5 minutes. Don’t use too much oil; just a small amount is enough. Use your fingertips to apply the oil to your roots and scalp, gently massaging in small circular motions.
- You can also use a dropper bottle to dispense the oil in several areas of your scalp. This method is simpler and less messy. Just make sure to massage the oil into your scalp for around 5 minutes.

Apply the oil to the remaining sections of your hair. Use your fingers to take a little more oil and rub your palms together. Then, smooth the oil through your hair with both hands. Use your fingers like a comb to ensure the oil is evenly distributed. Remember, only a small amount of oil is needed, so avoid using too much at this stage.

Put on a shower cap to cover all of your hair. Gently twist the hair on top of your head. If necessary, you can use a claw clip to secure it. Place the shower cap over your hair. The cap will help retain heat inside, preventing your hair from drying out.

Wrap a warm towel around your head and shower cap. Soak a towel in hot water, then wring out any excess moisture. Wrap the towel around your head and secure it by tucking the ends or using a large clip. The heat from the towel will enhance the oil's effectiveness.
- This method is similar to a hot oil treatment, but without the use of a hairdryer.

Wait for 30 minutes to 3 hours before washing the oil out of your hair. You can also leave it on overnight, though there isn't enough evidence to suggest it will be more effective. Be aware that rinsing the oil from your hair may take some time. Some people find that simply using conditioner, rather than shampoo, works better for removing the oil.
- If your hair doesn't feel greasy or heavy after the treatment, you can leave the oil in instead of rinsing it out.

Use this method once or twice a week for best results. However, don’t expect to see immediate effects after just one use. Try using castor oil for about 4 weeks before considering other methods. You might start noticing results after a month of regular use.
- If you prefer, you can apply castor oil daily or as often as needed, depending on your hair care goals.
Advice
- Castor oil-based hair care products are available in hair salons or beauty stores. These items typically contain additional ingredients and can be used right away without needing to be heated up first.
- Choose cold-pressed, unrefined castor oil. Pure 100% castor oil will deliver better results and provide the most nutrients. Avoid using refined or impure oils, as these contain very few nutrients and are less effective.
- Castor oil is an excellent moisturizer, making it ideal for dry hair. It also helps restore damaged and frizzy hair.
- If your hair often tangles, you’ll notice that it becomes smoother and easier to manage after applying this method.
- Castor oil can also help relieve an itchy scalp and reduce dandruff.
- It strengthens hair and promotes thickness. You can even use it to combat hair loss.
Warnings
- Do not use castor oil if you are pregnant or have a chronic digestive disorder.
- While castor oil can improve issues like hair loss and itchy scalp, it might also make these problems worse in some cases.
- If you have never used castor oil before and have sensitive skin, perform a patch test first. Dab a small amount of oil on the inner part of your arm and wait a few hours. If there is no irritation or allergic reaction, it’s safe to use on your scalp.
- Castor oil can darken hair slightly, but this effect is minimal and temporary.
