How to Obtain the Cut HM in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

This article provides instructions on how to get the Cut HM, which allows you to chop down trees blocking your way. You can obtain this HM in the FireRed and LeafGreen versions of Pokémon.

Meet the prerequisites. You will receive the "Cut" HM from the captain of the S.S. Anne ship in Vermilion City. So the first thing you need to do is head to Cerulean City.

Head straight to Nugget Bridge. This bridge is located near the northern part of Cerulean City.

Defeat the five trainers and their leader. Before crossing the bridge, you need to defeat five trainers here, and then face their leader.

Gain permission to cross the bridge. After defeating all six opponents, you can safely cross the bridge.

• If you have healing items, make sure to restore your Pokémon before continuing.

Cross Nugget Bridge. You will be taken to the northern part of Cerulean City.

Head north until you reach the end of the map. Once you can no longer go further, proceed with the next step.

Head east. Turn right and continue until you are stopped by a trainer.

Fight every trainer you encounter on your way to the biggest house. You will need to defeat several trainers along the route to the largest house in the city.

Enter the house. Upon reaching the largest house in the city, step inside. You'll find a Pokémon in the center of the room.

Talk to the Pokémon inside the house. This will grant you access to the computer in the corner of the room.

Use the computer. Stand in front of the computer, click on it, and wait for the Pokémon to transform into a person.

• You need to select an option on the computer for this event to happen.

Receive the S.S. Anne pass. After the Pokémon turns into a person named Bill, he will give you the S.S. Anne pass at Vermilion City.

Return to Cerulean City. From the large house, head west, then south to cross Nugget Bridge. This will lead you back to Cerulean City.

Overcome Misty's Gym. Enter Misty's water-themed gym and battle her. Once you complete this task, Vermilion City will be unlocked.

• Since Misty's gym is water-based, it is recommended to use Grass or Electric-type Pokémon.

Head to the house with the police officer in front. This house is located east of Misty's gym. You will notice that there is no one in front of the house at the moment.

Proceed to the entrance of the Underground Tunnel. Walk straight through the house, then head southeast until you reach the Underground Tunnel house.

Pass through the tunnel. Keep going straight into the house. You'll be transported to the other side and arrive in Vermilion City.

Head straight to the ship entrance. This is located at the southernmost point of Vermilion City. A guard will block your way when you attempt to pass through the ship entrance.

Show the ship pass to the guard. Press A to perform this action. The guard will allow you to board the ship immediately.

Defeat every trainer and opponent you encounter. Board the ship and keep moving forward, battling anyone who crosses your path. You'll face your rival here; once you defeat them, you can proceed to find the captain.

Find the captain. Head up the stairs behind your opponent to enter the captain's area. You'll find him standing next to a barrel.

Pat the captain's back. Approach the captain and press A to perform this action.

Receive the "Cut" HM. After patting the captain's back, he will give you the "Cut" HM. You can now use it with your favorite Pokémon.

Teach the "Cut" HM to a Pokémon. Once you allow one of your Pokémon to learn the "Cut" HM, you can chop down trees blocking paths around the world by selecting the Pokémon and using the move on the tree.

• "HM" stands for "Hidden Machine".
• When your opponent uses Electric Pokémon, you should use Ground-type Pokémon. If you don't have a Ground-type, you can catch Diglett or Dugtrio in Diglett's Cave, located at the eastern exit of Vermilion.
• You can use the "Cut" move to participate in the battle with Lt. Surge.

• Make sure to have plenty of healing items. You'll battle many trainers on your way to Cerulean City and earn the "Cut" HM.
