After a long, exhausting day, nothing feels better than popping open a cold beer to refresh and relax. But what if you don’t have a bottle opener? Fortunately, the key in your pocket can be an easy solution to this problem. You can use a key to open a bottle cap effortlessly, whether you choose to pop it off or pry the edge of the cap first!
Steps
Pop the Bottle Cap

Hold the neck of the bottle with your non-dominant hand. You need to grip the bottle firmly so it doesn’t slip while you apply pressure. No need to squeeze too hard—just ensure a steady hold!
Place a sturdy key, like a car key, under the bottle cap. This task isn’t suitable for fragile cabinet keys or aluminum house keys. Opt for a large, durable key such as a car key or a bulky office key. Ideally, choose a key with ridges at the tip to easily slide it under the edge of the bottle cap.
Twist the key upward until you hear the cap pop off. Move the key in your dominant hand to twist it upward toward yourself. This motion is similar to turning a key to start a car. Since the key is wedged under the cap, it will lever the cap open!
Try applying pressure on another part of the cap if it doesn’t open easily. Depending on the type of cap, the sturdiness of the key, and your experience with this method, the cap might not pop off on the first try. If unsuccessful, rotate the bottle to a different part of the cap and try again!
Pry the Edge of the Bottle Cap

Locate a bent edge. If there’s any spot on the cap’s edge that’s slightly lifted, start there! If not, you can choose any spot to begin.

Insert the tip of the key under the edge of the cap. Push the key in until it’s almost fully wedged beneath the bottle cap’s edge. Typically, you won’t be able to insert it completely—just enough to create a bit of leverage.
Twist the key until the edge of the cap bends upward. Gently but firmly wiggle the key back and forth to bend the cap’s edge. Be careful not to press the edge down into the bottle—your goal is to pry the cap outward or upward.
Repeat until at least four edges are lifted. Continue twisting the key under the edges until a minimum of four spots are pried up. Ensure these spots are close together—the cap won’t open if they’re evenly spaced around it.

Hold the bottle firmly with your non-dominant hand. Grip the bottle tightly enough to avoid injuring yourself or others, but don’t squeeze too hard—your hand might be strong enough to crush the bottle!
Push the key’s tip under the previously bent edge. Insert the key as far as possible under the cap’s edge. If you can only get it partially in, that’s fine. You just need enough space to use the key as a lever.
Lever the key upward until the cap pops off. Use your dominant hand to firmly grip the key and pry it upward to release the cap. Be careful not to apply too much force. If you’re too rough, the bottle’s neck could break!
Tips
- Be cautious with the bottle cap’s edge as it can be very sharp.
- Check if it’s a twist-off cap before using a key to open it!
- If you frequently find yourself searching for a bottle opener, consider buying a keychain bottle opener!
