CSV (Comma-Separated Values) files contain tabular data in plain text format, often used for storing contact details such as emails. While you can open CSV files with many programs (like text editors), the data is most effectively viewed in spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel, OpenOffice Calc, or Google Sheets. To open the file, simply select 'Open' from the 'File' menu, choose the CSV file, and adjust delimiter settings if the data doesn't display correctly. Google Sheets follows a similar process, but you’ll need to upload the file to Google's servers. The workflow will be smoother if the data is neatly organized!
Steps
Using Microsoft Excel

Launch Microsoft Excel on your computer.

Click on the 'File' menu and select 'Open' from the top-left corner. A file browsing window will open on your computer.
- You can also press Ctrl + O (Windows) or ⌘ Cmd + O (Mac) to perform the same action.

Select the CSV file and click 'Open'. The file will open and display in a new Excel spreadsheet.

Click on the 'Data' tab to access the 'Text to Columns' wizard (optional). If Excel displays all the text from the CSV file in a single column, this option will assist the program in better parsing the data. The Data tab is located in the top menu bar and will reveal the data-specific options.
- If you want to separate into specific columns, click and drag the cursor to highlight the columns you wish to split.

Click on 'Text to Columns'. This is one of the options within the data tab. Once clicked, the 'Text to Columns' wizard will open.

Select 'Delimited' and click 'Next'. The delimiter will create boundaries between data points in the text file (in this case, a comma).

Select the 'Comma' checkbox and click 'Finish'. All the text that was previously separated by commas will now be split into individual columns.
Using OpenOffice Calc

Download and open OpenOffice Calc. Choose your operating system from the dropdown menu and click 'Download'. Run the installer and select the OpenOffice product you want to install. The only product required to open CSV files is OpenOffice Calc.
- OpenOffice is free software.

Click on the 'File' menu and select 'Open'. This menu, located at the top-left corner, will open a file browsing window on your computer.

Select the CSV file and click 'Open'. The file will open in the OpenOffice Calc spreadsheet program.

Click on the 'Data' menu and select 'Text to Columns' (optional). If OpenOffice Calc doesn't separate the data correctly, you can manually specify the delimiter. The Data menu is located in the top menu bar.
- If you want to divide into specific columns, click and drag the cursor to highlight the columns you wish to split.

Select the 'Separate By' radio button. This option can be found under the 'Separator Options' heading.

Check the 'Comma' box and click 'OK'. All the text previously separated by commas will now be split into individual columns.
Using Google Sheets

Visit Google Sheets in your web browser and log in with your Google account. Enter your username and password, then click 'Sign in'.
- Google Sheets is free to use, but you must have a Google account. If you don’t have one, click 'Create Account' and follow the on-screen instructions to set up a Google username and password.
- Google Sheets can also be accessed through Google Drive.

Click on 'Open File Picker'. This button, represented by a folder icon, is located at the top-right corner of the page. The 'Open a File' window will appear.

Click on the 'Upload' tab. This will take you to the CSV file upload interface.

Drag the CSV file into the upload window. A progress bar will appear as the upload begins.
- Alternatively, you can click on the 'Select file to upload' button, which is located in the center of the upload window, to browse and select the CSV file from your computer.

Wait for the CSV file to finish uploading. Once completed, the file will automatically open in Google Sheets.
- This process may take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes, depending on the file size.
- Google Sheets will automatically separate all the data that is divided by commas in the CSV file.
