How to Open a RAR File

This article provides a guide on how to extract and open RAR files. Essentially, a RAR file is a folder containing multiple compressed files to save space. With the help of free software, you can extract and open RAR files on your iPhone, Android, Windows computer, and Mac computer.

Download iZip. The free iZip app is used to open RAR files and other types of compressed files. Here's how to download it:

• Open App Store
• Tap on Search
• Tap on the search bar in the App Store
• Type in izip, then tap Search
• Tap GET
• Enter your Apple ID password or use Touch ID.

Open the RAR file. Launch the app containing the RAR file and tap on it. A gray screen will appear with the name of the RAR file displayed in the center.

• Since iPhones do not have a built-in file manager, your RAR file is typically found in the email app or cloud storage app.

Swipe right on the screen. Swipe the top app bar from right to left. You will see the iZip folder icon here.

Tap on Copy to iZip (Copy to iZip). This is the yellow folder icon located near the end of the app bar. This will open the RAR folder in iZip.

• If you don't see this option, tap on ⋯, then tap the toggle button next to iZip and hit Done to make the option visible.

Tap on OK when prompted. This will extract the RAR file, allowing you to access it.

• If you do not see the extraction option, follow these steps:
  • Tap the circle next to each file in the RAR folder.
  • Tap Extract at the bottom of the screen.

Download the RAR file to Android. If the RAR file isn't stored on your Android device, you'll need to download it. Open the app where the RAR file is stored (such as Gmail or Google Drive), locate the RAR file, and download it.

• If the RAR file is already saved on your Android device, you can skip this step.

Tap on OPEN (Open). This green button is located near the top of the WinZip app page. This action will open WinZip.

Tap on START (Start). This option appears at the bottom of the WinZip homepage.

• You may need to swipe away some advertisements first.

Locate the RAR file. Tap on SD (SD Card) or Internal (Internal storage) to access the folder where the RAR file is saved.

• If you've downloaded the RAR file, tap on the Downloads folder, and then select the folder for the app where you saved the RAR file (if necessary).

Tap and hold the RAR file. A menu will appear after about one second.

Tap on Unzip to… (Extract to…). This option is located at the top of the menu.

Choose where to extract the folder. You will select one of the following locations to save the extracted files:

• Internal Storage - Extract the RAR file to your device's internal storage and folder of choice on Android.
• My Files - Extract the RAR file to the My Files folder on Android.
• Google Drive - Extract the RAR file to a folder on Google Drive.
• Dropbox - Extract the RAR file to your Dropbox account. If you don't have a Dropbox account, you'll need to create an account first.

Tap on UNZIP HERE (Extract here). This option is located at the lower-right corner of the screen. By tapping this, the RAR file will open and the extracted files will be saved to the location you have selected. Now, you can view the extracted files from the RAR archive.

Find out whether your Windows operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit. The downloaded file may differ depending on whether you are using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows.

Open the WinRAR download page. You will go to https://www.rarlab.com/download.htm. WinRAR is a helpful, free tool that you can use on any Windows computer to open RAR files.

• If the link is broken, you can visit https://www.rarlab.com and click on the Downloads link on the left side of the page.

Click on the download link that matches your system's bit version. If your computer runs a 64-bit OS, click on WinRAR x64 (64 bit) 5.50 near the top of the page. For 32-bit users, choose the WinRAR x86 (32 bit) 5.50 link higher up. This will start the download of the WinRAR installer on your computer.

• You may need to click Save or confirm the download to start the process.

Double-click the WinRAR installer file. You will easily find this file in your familiar downloads folder. The WinRAR installation window will appear immediately after you click on it.

Download the Unarchive app. Follow these steps:

• Open the App Store on your Mac.
• Click on the search bar at the top-right corner of the window.
• Type the unarchiver in the search bar and press ⏎ Return.
• Click on INSTALL below the The Unarchiver app.

Type unarchiver into Spotlight. This is how you search for the Unarchiver app on your computer.

Click on The Unarchiver. This app will appear at the top of the Spotlight search results. A new window will pop up on the screen.

Click on Ask every time when prompted. This ensures that Unarchiver will always ask you whether you'd like to extract a RAR file.

Locate the RAR file. Open Finder by clicking the blue face icon in the Mac Dock, then navigate to the folder containing the RAR file in the left-hand panel of the Finder window.

• You may need to click through several folders to find the RAR file.

Select the RAR file. Click on the RAR file in the Finder window to select it.

Click on File (Menu). This menu is displayed in the top left corner of your screen.

Choose Open With (Option). This option will appear within the File menu. Another menu will pop up to the right of the currently visible menu.

Click on Unarchiver in the displayed menu. Your RAR file will open using Unarchiver.

Choose the extraction folder. Click on a folder on the left side of the window to select it as the destination for your extracted RAR file.

Click on Extract (Unzip). This option is located at the bottom right corner of the Unarchiver window. By selecting this, Unarchiver will convert your RAR file into a regular folder at the destination you chose. Once the extraction is complete, you can open the extracted folder just like any other to view its contents.

• WinRAR offers a 40-day trial period free of charge. After this time, you are encouraged to purchase the software. However, unlike most other trial programs, WinRAR does not require you to buy it to continue using it.

• Many files within a RAR folder cannot be opened on mobile phones or tablets.
