This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to open .img disk image files on Windows or macOS. The .img file is a representation of a file system—you can mount it as a drive or open it in applications like WinZip.
Steps
Mount as a Drive (on Windows)
Press ⊞ Win+E. This action opens Windows Explorer on Windows.
Open the folder containing the .img file.
Double-click the .img file. Windows will mount the .img file as a drive and display its contents.
- To copy files from the .img to another folder on your computer, simply drag them into the desired folder.
- When done, you will need to unmount the .img file. To do this, scroll down to the left pane of File Explorer, right-click on the mounted .img drive, and select Eject.
Extract using WinZip (on Windows)
Launch WinZip on your Windows computer.
You can usually find this program in the All Apps section of the Start menu.
- If WinZip is not installed, you can download it for free from http://www.winzip.com/win/en/.
Click the Open icon. It’s the blue folder icon located near the top-left corner of WinZip.
Select Disk images (*.img, *.iso, *.vhd, *.vmdk) from the selection list. You will find it in the lower-right corner of the window.
Navigate to the folder containing the .img file.
Select the .img file and click Open (Open). A confirmation message will appear immediately on the screen.
Click Yes, unzip the files to (folder name) (Yes, unzip the file to (folder name)). This action will extract the files to a specific folder (created within the folder where the *.img file is stored).
Press ⊞ Win+E. This will open File Explorer.
