In this article, Mytour will guide you through the process of opening firewall ports on your router or Windows computer. By default, important ports in the firewall are closed to prevent unauthorized access. Opening these ports can help resolve connection issues between your device and the router, or between software and devices, though it can also increase the risk of cyberattacks and computer breaches.
Steps
Opening Firewall Ports on the Router

Find your router's IP address. You need the router's IP address to access its configuration page.
- Windows - Open the Start menu, click on the Settings gear, click Network & Internet, then click View your network properties and find the address listed under "Default gateway".
- Mac - Open the Apple menu, click on System Preferences > Network > Advanced > TCP/IP and look for the "Router:" field.

Access the router setup page. Open a web browser and enter the router's IP address in the address bar.

Enter your username and password. If you have configured security for your router, enter the username and password you set. If not, refer to the guide that came with your router or search online for the default login credentials.

Find the Port Forwarding section. Since each router has a different configuration page, look for these options (or their variants):
- Port Forwarding
- Applications
- Gaming
- Virtual Servers
- Firewall
- Protected Setup
- You might also find an Advanced Settings section.

Open the port you need. Each router may have different procedures, but the required information remains the same:
- Name or Description - Enter the name of the application.
- Type or Service Type - Choose between TCP, UDP, or both. If you're unsure, select Both or TCP/UDP.
- Inbound or Start - Enter the port number. If opening multiple ports, use the lowest number.
- Private or End - Re-enter the port number. If opening multiple ports, use the highest number.

Expert warning: When opening ports, ensure that you don't open any standard remote monitoring ports that someone could exploit to attack your computer. For example, ports numbered 80 and 85 are usually blocked on routers because they are often used for remote control and can easily be exploited by hackers to gain access to your network.

Enter your computer's private IP address. Enter it in the "Private IP" or "Device IP" field. You can find your PC's IP or Mac's IP address.

Save your settings. Click the Save or Apply button. If prompted, you may need to reboot the router for the changes to take effect.
- Now, you can check the "Enabled" or "On" box next to the port forwarding setting.
Opening Windows Firewall Ports

Type windows firewall with advanced security into Start. This will search for the firewall configuration program on your computer.

Click on Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. You'll find the program at the top of the Start menu.

Enter the password if prompted. If you are not the administrator of this computer, you will need to enter the administrator password to proceed.

Click on Inbound Rules (Inbound Rules). This option is located at the upper left corner of the window.

Click on New Rule (New Rule). You'll find this option on the right side of the window.

Check the "Port" option, then click Next (Next). This will allow you to choose the port you want to open.

Select TCP or UDP. Check the box for either TCP or UDP. Unlike most routers, you need to choose between TCP or UDP to create a rule.
- Refer to the program's documentation to make sure you're using the correct protocol.

Enter the port range. Don’t forget to choose “Specific local ports” and then enter the port(s) you want to open. You can add multiple single ports separated by commas, or specify a range using a hyphen between the start and end port numbers.
- For example, you can enter 8830 to open port 8830, 8830, 8824 to open ports 8830 and 8824, or 8830-8835 to open ports 8830 through 8835.

Click Next (Next). This button is located at the bottom of the window.

Don’t forget to check “Allow the connection” and then click the Next (Next) button. If this option is unchecked, make sure to check the box before continuing.

Make sure to check all 3 boxes on the "Profile" page. These include the "Domain", "Private", and "Public" options.

Click Next. The button is located at the bottom of the screen.

Enter a name for the rule, then click Finish (Finish). This step saves your settings and opens the port.
Allow Applications on Mac

- Remember that by default, the Mac firewall is disabled. If you haven’t activated the firewall, this step is not necessary.

Click System Preferences (System Preferences). It can be found in the Apple drop-down menu.

Click on Security & Privacy (Security & Privacy). This option has a house icon located at the top of the System Preferences window.

Click on the Firewall (Firewall) tab. This tab is located at the top of the Security & Privacy window.

Unlock the Firewall menu. Click the lock icon, enter your Mac administrator password, and then click Unlock.

Click on Firewall Options (Firewall Options). This is located on the right-hand side of the Firewall page.

Click the + button. You’ll see the option in the middle of the page just below the window.

Select the application that you wish to allow through the firewall. Simply click on the application to choose it.

Click on the Add button. This button is located near the bottom of the window. It will add the program to the firewall's exception list.

Be sure to check the "Allow incoming connections" box next to the application's name. If you don’t see this box to the right of the application name, hold the Control key and click on the application’s name, then check the Allow incoming connections box.

Click the OK button. This action saves your settings and allows the application to bypass the firewall.
Advice
- As a general rule, most applications use TCP ports. Time-sensitive programs, like video games, may use either UDP or TCP ports.
Warning
- Be cautious when opening ports. Opening the wrong port may compromise your computer's security, increasing the risk of viruses and other dangerous activities, such as hacker attacks.
