How to Perform Coin Magic Tricks

Coin magic is often considered a basic trick, making it ideal for those who are just starting out in the world of magic. The four tricks explained in this article are easy to learn after just a short amount of practice and can add excitement to any moment. Just make sure not to reveal the secrets, and others will be left wondering how you possess such magical abilities.

Start by introducing to your audience that you will magically transfer a coin from one hand to the other. They will likely be skeptical. Present the trick convincingly, explaining that you've spent a great deal of time perfecting the ancient art of object manipulation. The more they doubt, the more entertaining the magic will be.

• Magic relies heavily on confidence and your ability to distract the audience. The more engaging your story, the less the viewers will focus on your hands and the tricks you're performing. They’ll be too caught up in the joy you're providing instead of questioning how you'll pull off the trick.

Close your fist, but leave a small gap between your index finger and the other fingers. Check the tutorial video above—can you spot the tiny gap between the index finger and the other fingers? It's perfect.

• The coin will fall from your hand even if you don’t open your palm. It's easy to make mistakes at this step, so ensure that the coin is positioned in a way that allows it to slip through the gap.

Move your closed fist over the other hand and drop the coin without opening your palm. This looks like you're rotating your fist over the other hand, but what the audience doesn’t see is the moment the coin falls into the other hand. Once you feel the coin has dropped, quickly close the other hand.

• Widen the gap of your fist to let the coin fall into the other hand; otherwise, the coin might get stuck inside.

Ask the audience which hand the coin is in. They might choose the original fist since you never opened it to reveal the coin was transferred to the other hand.

• If they choose the second hand, ask them to explain how you managed to move the coin between your hands without having any magical powers to control objects.

Slowly open both hands, revealing that the original fist is empty and the coin is in the other hand. If you manage not to move your fingers when the coin drops and close the other hand at the right moment, the audience will be truly amazed. Now, can you move the table from one side to the other?

• If you’re struggling to master this trick, try using a smaller coin. A smaller coin will easily slip through any gap created by your fingers.

• The advantage of this trick is that you can perform it multiple times without the risk of being caught — unlike other tricks that require a new audience for each performance.
• However, you cannot perform this trick if someone else tosses the coin. You should inform them that you need to handle the coin first and can only perform the trick if you’re allowed to touch it.

Prepare a cloth, a coin, and a piece of double-sided tape. Choose a discreet spot and attach the double-sided tape to one corner of the cloth where it won't be visible. Make sure the coin will stick to the tape.

• Aside from using a cloth, you can also use paper, fabric, or tissue. The specific coin doesn’t matter, but an average-sized coin, like the US penny, works well for performing the trick.
• The smaller the piece of tape, the better (as it won’t be noticeable when you're still mastering the trick); however, the coin may not stick securely to the cloth during the trick.

Let the audience see the cloth clearly. At this stage, keep the double-sided tape hidden and position it facing toward you. The goal is to let the audience know that the cloth (or whatever object you've chosen) is completely normal.

• When positioning your fingers near the tape, be cautious not to lose its adhesive strength due to oil from your fingers before starting the performance.

Place the coin on the taped surface of the cloth. Let the audience see this clearly. It’s just a coin placed on the center of the cloth, right? Exactly. However, make sure that the tape is cleverly concealed so the audience can't spot it.

• It’s best to choose a cloth with a good drape. This way, when you show the center of the cloth with the coin placed on it, the edges of the cloth will fall down, making it impossible for anyone to see the tape.

Fold the corners of the cloth towards the center, starting with the corner that has the tape. You will fold each corner of the cloth towards the center. After folding the corners, you will make the coin disappear. However, before doing that, ask the audience to confirm that the coin is still there. This ensures no one doubts the trick.

• Keep the folded corners in place as the spectator touches the cloth. Encourage them to touch both sides of the cloth. Your magic trick will go smoothly as long as they don't move the cloth.

Unfold the corners so the audience can see the coin has vanished, but make sure your finger is still on the coin. And just like that, the coin is gone! Raise the cloth, fabric, or paper you used to show the audience. Shake the cloth several times, but always keep your finger on the taped corner. Where did the coin go?

• Note: If someone asks how you did it, simply say, “Magicians never reveal their secrets!”

• Only perform the magic trick once for each spectator; otherwise, they will pay close attention and figure out how you did it the second time.
• Practice in front of a mirror!
• Never reveal how the magic trick is done to anyone!
• You can practice by performing for family members to improve your skills.

• Try to practice these tricks as much as possible before performing for others.
