Today, Mytour will guide you through the process of perineal massage for expectant mothers. This technique helps relax and soften the pelvic floor (the area between the anus and genitals). Perineal massage is typically performed in the late stages of pregnancy to reduce the risk of perineal tearing during childbirth.
Steps
Self-Perineal Massage

Consult your doctor before starting. Perineal massage can be harmful if too much force is used, insufficient lubrication is applied, or if performed incorrectly. For safety, discuss your plans with your doctor beforehand.

Soak in warm water for ten minutes. This helps you relax before the massage and loosens the muscles around the pelvic floor. You can add bath oil to soften the skin and calm your mind.

Trim your nails to avoid scratching. The tissues between the vagina and anus are very delicate. Keep your nails short to prevent scratching or causing discomfort.

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. To avoid introducing bacteria into the birth canal, ensure your hands are clean before starting.

Choose a comfortable position. A bed is the most suitable place for perineal massage. Use pillows to support your back and bend your knees. You should feel relaxed during the process, so it’s important to find a completely comfortable spot.
- You can also perform the massage while sitting on the toilet with your legs raised.

Use a lubricant. Apply a water-based lubricant to your thumb and the perineal area. Vitamin E oil, almond oil, or olive oil works best.

Insert both thumbs approximately 3 cm deep into the vaginal canal. Place the remaining fingers on the buttocks. Press the thumbs down towards the anus and along the sides of the vaginal walls. Maintain this position for about 1 minute. You may start to feel a slight burning or tension.

Gently massage the lower half of the vaginal area. Move your thumbs back and forth and up and down in a 'U' shape. Try to relax your muscles during the massage. Perform this motion for 2-3 minutes.

Repeat the massage routine. In summary, you should spend about 10 minutes on the massage. If done daily, after a few weeks, your pelvic floor will become more elastic.

Rinse off. After the massage, you may need to shower or rinse to clean off the lubricant.
Have someone massage the perineum

Select a trustworthy individual. The ideal person to perform this sensitive therapy should be someone who doesn’t make you feel uncomfortable, such as a partner or a medical professional. Ensure you can communicate openly and feel relaxed during the massage process.

Prepare yourself for emotional reactions. Even if the masseuse is your husband, you might still feel shy or embarrassed. This is natural. Remember, the goal of perineal massage, like any other massage technique, is to relieve tension and reduce discomfort for expectant mothers.

Communicate with the masseuse. Inform your husband or medical professional if you feel discomfort. A slight sense of tension or unease is normal, but if it becomes too much, ask them to reduce pressure or pause briefly.

Choose a relaxed and comfortable position. Position yourself with your legs apart and muscles relaxed. Lie on the bed, bend your knees, and place a pillow under your back. This posture makes it easier for the assistant to perform the massage.

Ensure the assistant is prepared. Similarly, the assistant should trim their nails neatly and wash their hands thoroughly before starting. If preferred, they can wear rubber gloves during the massage to maintain hygiene in the sensitive area.

Use a lubricant. The masseuse should apply a water-based lubricant to their hands and the perineal area of the pregnant woman. Vitamin E oil, almond oil, or olive oil are the best options.

Begin massaging the area gently. The assistant should use their thumb to massage the outer part of the perineum. Slow, back-and-forth motions on the external area will help both parties get comfortable and make the process smoother.

Introduce the index finger. The assistant should switch to using their index finger for the massage. Once inserted, they should move it in a 'U' shape while applying gentle downward pressure.

Repeat the massage routine. For optimal results, the massage should be performed in two sets per session. Aim to do this daily during the last six weeks before delivery.

Rinse off. After the massage, you may need to shower or rinse to clean off the lubricant.
Advice
- Remember to incorporate gentle pulling motions during the massage. This helps stretch the skin and enhances its elasticity.
Warning
- Avoid using mineral oil as a lubricant, as it may irritate the delicate tissues of the vaginal area.
