Craigslist is a bustling marketplace where you can buy or sell almost anything legal, along with personal interactions. To make your Craigslist post stand out, extra effort is essential. Spend a bit more time on your next post and follow this guide to learn some crucial tips and tricks.
Steps
Content

Title. The title is the first thing Craigslist visitors see. Make it eye-catching and informative. If you don’t provide enough details, people won’t click on your ad.
- If you’re selling something, describe its quality. Ensure the title is relevant to the subject and includes a few descriptive lines. Use capitalization for emphasis. Consider phrases like:
- LIKE NEW
- Single owner
- Mint condition
- MUST SELL
- Works GREAT
- If selling a house or apartment, use cozy language to create a welcoming feel. Include basic details like the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, and square footage.

Add a description. The description is a critical part of your post. It’s the body of the ad where users seek information.
- Tell a story. This is an effective tactic when selling something. Avoid saying you’re discarding an item because you no longer like it. Instead, explain that you’re upgrading or relocating.
- Highlight the product. Approach the ad as a salesperson. Show users why they should choose your product over others in the search results. Include technical specifications and details to make the ad more professional.
- Compare your asking price to the item’s original cost. This helps users understand the value they’re getting. Useful for high-priced items.
- For rental property ads, describe both interior and exterior features. Discuss neighborhood perks like nearby schools, restaurants, or entertainment. Mention recent renovations and outline move-in timelines and fees.
- For job postings, include work hours and salary details. Discuss required qualifications and benefits for candidates. You can list the salary as DOE (Depending on Experience).
- If seeking a job, showcase your potential and list your skills in a specific field. Write the post like a cover letter or resume to convey that you’re the ideal candidate.
- For personal ads, be creative! Stand out with witty, poetic, or unique language. A distinctive post will attract more attention than a generic one. Craigslist is a lively and anonymous platform, so feel free to express yourself safely!
- If seeking a partner, market yourself as you would a product. List your strengths and what makes you unique. Be assertive to show you know what you want. Make yourself shine in the post.
- Avoid sharing personal identifying information. Email communication won’t reveal your real name, address, or occupation.

Add photos to your post. Use Craigslist's photo upload tool to include images from your computer. You can add multiple photos, but the first one will appear next to the listing.
- Images are highly beneficial when selling physical items. If users don’t see photos, they’re likely to skip the listing. Potential buyers want to assess the condition of the item.
- When selling a car, take a side profile photo. Include additional shots of the interior and other angles.
- For rental property ads, capture the front view of the house. Add photos of the interior, backyard, and other perspectives.
- For personal ads, decide if you’re comfortable sharing your photo with strangers. If you choose to upload one, ensure it complies with Craigslist’s terms.
- Craigslist will soon remove direct links to external images. To include photos, use the upload tool. You can also link to external sites like photobucket, listhd, or classpics for high-quality images and add a "more photos" link in your Craigslist ad.

Enhance your text. Craigslist supports HTML in posts, allowing you to format text. You can make it bold, italic, colored, bulleted, etc. Visit the Craigslist Help page for detailed instructions. Use bullet points to list features, making it easier for buyers to scan quickly instead of reading long paragraphs.
Categories

Access Craigslist. Choose the city where you want to post your ad. Craigslist is divided into multiple cities and regions.

Click on "Post to classifieds." All Craigslist posts start from here.

Select a posting category. The main categories are divided into six general sections: Jobs, Housing, For Sale, Services, Personals, and Community. Choose the category that best fits your ad:
- "job offered"
- "gig offered" (short-term, small, miscellaneous jobs)
- "resume/job wanted"
- "housing offered"
- "housing wanted"
- "for sale by owner"
- "for sale by dealer"
- "item wanted"
- "service offered"
- "personal/romance" (lost connections)
- "community"
- "event"

Choose a specific subcategory. For example, under Services Offered, you can select: automotive services, beauty services, computer services, financial services, real estate services, etc.
- Each category has smaller subcategories. Pick the one that best matches your ad. For instance, if selling a gaming system, choose "video gaming" instead of "toys & games" or "electronics." This makes your ad easier to find.
- If your ad fits multiple categories, try to select the most applicable one.

Post

Add a specific location. If you're advertising something like a garden plot or an item that requires an address, include it. Additionally, provide identifying information.
- Many users add phone numbers and websites. Don’t forget to include http://www before the link.

Include a price. The price field appears in product sale posts. Set a reasonable price, and you can add OBO ("or best offer") if you're open to negotiation.

Add an email address. Craigslist requires an email address to create a post. The default email option anonymizes your address, meaning no one can see it on the site or when responding to your ad.
- Anonymous emails only work for the first message through the site. Any subsequent emails between you and the other party will reveal your email address. It’s recommended to create a dedicated email address for Craigslist transactions.
- You must provide a valid email address to receive a confirmation email from Craigslist before your ad can be posted.

Add your post to a map. Craigslist offers the option to include your post in an interactive, searchable map, allowing users to locate where you’re providing services.
- Simply enter the city and zip code, or provide the exact address if preferred. A small map will be added to your post, and it will also appear in the searchable map.

Submit your post. After selecting photos, you may be asked to complete a CAPTCHA. You’ll then receive an email from Craigslist containing a link to your post, where you can make final edits before publishing.
- Some Craigslist categories require phone verification before publishing. This helps reduce automated posts.
Tips
- Using proper grammar and spelling makes your ad easier to read.
- Monitor your post’s message section. You’ll need it to check or remove the ad after selling your item or service. Always delete the ad once it’s no longer relevant to avoid wasting users’ time.
- Stay vigilant against scams. Always transact in cash and in person. Craigslist does not guarantee any transactions.
- Use photos and direct links.
- Consider setting up a dedicated email address for Craigslist. Even with the "Anonymous" option, your email will be visible when you reply to messages sent through the anonymous feature.
Warnings
- Do not repost the same product or service within 48 hours.
- Avoid posting more than one ad within 48 hours, or your IP may be temporarily banned. Excessive posting can lead to a ban for the entire Class C and ISP, requiring phone verification to resume activity.
