This guide will show you how to post on Facebook using both the mobile app and the desktop browser version. Your post can include text, images, videos, and location information. You can share posts on your personal profile, your friends' profiles, or in groups you're a member of.
Steps
Posting on Mobile Devices
Open the Facebook app. The Facebook app has a white 'f' icon on a dark blue background. Once logged in, your News Feed will appear.
- If you're not logged in, enter your email address (or phone number) and password, then tap the Log in button.
Go to the page where you want to post. The steps vary depending on where you want to share your post:
- Your personal profile – You can post on your profile from the create post box at the top of the News Feed.
- A friend's personal profile – Tap the search bar at the top of the screen, enter your friend's name, tap their name, and select their profile icon.
- A group – Tap the ☰ icon, select Groups, then tap the Groups tab and choose the group where you want to post.
Tap the create post box. This box is located at the top of your News Feed. If you're posting on a friend's profile, this box is located just below the photo section near the top of the page, or beneath the cover photo when posting in a group.
- In the create post box, you might see prompts like 'Write something' or 'What's on your mind?'
Upload a photo or video. Tap the Photo/Video option near the center of the post creation window, then select the photo or video you want to upload and tap Done. This will attach the photo or video to your post.
- You can select multiple photos or videos to share them together.
- If you prefer to post text only, you can skip this step.
Add text to your post. Tap the text field and type your message.
- You can also select a color circle in the middle of the screen to add a background color to your post. This feature is available for posts with 130 characters or fewer.
Tap the Add to your post option in the middle of the screen. This will display the following options:
- Photo/Video – Add a photo or video.
- Check In – Allow you to add a location to your post.
- Feeling/Activity/Sticker – Add a mood, activity, or sticker.
- Tag People – Add someone to your post. This also shows the post on the timeline of the tagged person.
Select an option to add more content to your post. This action is entirely optional. If you don't want to add anything, just proceed to the next step.
Click the Post button in the top-right corner of the screen. This action will publish your post on the selected page.
Post from a computer
Open Facebook. You will be directed to https://www.facebook.com/. If you're already logged in, your News Feed will appear on the screen.
- If you're not logged in, enter your email (or phone number) and password in the top-right corner to proceed.
Go to the page where you want to post. The steps will vary depending on where you want to post:
- Your personal page - You can post to your personal page from the post creation box at the top of your News Feed.
- A friend's personal page - Click the search bar at the top of the screen, type your friend's name, click their profile, and select the icon for their page.
- A group - Click the Groups section on the left side of the screen, select the Groups tab, and click the group where you want to post.
Click on the 'Create Post' box. This box is located at the top of your News Feed page. If you're posting on a friend's personal page, it will be located under their cover photo.
Add text to your post. Type your text into the 'Create Post' box. You can also add a background color by selecting one of the color options below the text box.
- You can only add a background color to posts with 130 characters or fewer.
Include additional elements in your post. To do this, click on one of the options below the 'Create Post' box:
- Photo/Video - Allows you to upload a photo or video from your device.
- Tag Friends - Lets you tag one or more friends. Your post will also appear on their personal page.
- Check-in - Allows you to add a location or place to your post.
- Feeling/Activity - Lets you add a feeling or activity to your post.
Click the Post button, the blue one at the bottom-right corner of the window, to publish your post.
Tip
- When posting to a group from your Facebook page, click the More option in the top-right corner of the 'Create Post' box to see additional options, such as adding files or creating documents.
- You may receive special offers from businesses when you check in. For example, some restaurants offer complimentary drinks when you check in using their official Facebook page.
