It seems that no one knows who exactly invented the Margarita. There are numerous stories about its origin, which is why this drink comes in many different variations. Due to the countless versions, the Margarita is truly a drink worth experimenting with.
Steps
Classic Margarita Preparation

Gather the following ingredients:
- 1-2 parts 100% Tequila made from Agave
- 1 part fresh lime juice
- 1 part Triple Sec
- Table salt or sea salt
- Limes for garnish
- Ice cubes
- Tabasco sauce (optional)
Wet the rim of the glass with lime. Cut a small slit on a lime wedge and place it on the rim of the glass. Rub the lime wedge around the rim to wet it.
Coat the rim of the glass with salt. Pour some coarse salt (table salt or sea salt) onto a plate. Hold the glass parallel to the plate and gently rotate the glass so the rim touches the salt.
- Don't just press the glass into the plate like you're stamping cookies. Make sure the salt only sticks to the outer edge of the glass.
- You can also use sugar instead of salt for the rim.
Fill the cocktail shaker with ice cubes, about 2/3 to 3/4 full. Use large ice cubes as small ones tend to melt quickly and dilute the drink.
Pour 1-2 parts Tequila into the shaker. To make one serving of Margarita, add 1-2 parts Tequila to the shaker. The amount of Tequila depends on your taste preference.
- Start with 1 part Tequila and add more if you'd like a stronger flavor.
Pour 1 part Triple Sec into the shaker. To make one serving of Margarita, you’ll need to add 1 part Triple Sec to the shaker.
Pour 1 part fresh lime juice into the shaker. To prepare one serving of Margarita, you’ll need 1 part lime juice.
Shake vigorously. Shake for at least 15 seconds to ensure that all ingredients blend together properly.
Pour the drink from the shaker into the glass. If you want to add ice to your Margarita, place the ice cubes in the glass before pouring the drink to prevent splashing.

Garnish with a lime and enjoy. If desired, you can add a little Tabasco sauce for extra flavor.
In this recipe, you can experiment with the following ratios (Tequila: Triple Sec: lime juice):
- 3:2:1
- 3:1:1
- 7:4:3
- 8:1.5:3 (to reduce the flavor of Triple Sec)
Simple Margarita Recipe with 3 Ingredients

Prepare the following ingredients:
- 1-1.5 parts fresh lime juice
- 2 parts water
- 1-2 parts 100% Agave Tequila
- 1/2-1 part Agave syrup for extra flavor
- Ice cubes
- Table salt or sea salt
Coat the rim of the glass with salt. First, wet the rim of the glass with lime. Then, invert the glass into a shallow plate containing coarse salt (such as table salt or sea salt).
Pour lime juice into the cocktail shaker. To make one serving of Margarita, use 1-1.5 parts lime juice, which is roughly the juice of 2 medium or large limes.
Add water to the shaker. For one serving of Margarita, use 2 parts water. It's best to use filtered or bottled water to ensure no minerals or additives affect the flavor of the drink.
Pour Tequila into the shaker. To make one serving of Margarita, add 1-2 parts Tequila, depending on how strong you want the drink to be.
Pour Agave syrup into the shaker. To prepare one Margarita, use about 1/2-1 part of Agave syrup, adjusting to taste.
Add a scoop of ice cubes (ice cream scoop) into the shaker. Add more ice than water—fill the shaker with ice cubes about 2/3 to 3/4 full.
Shake vigorously. Shake for at least 15 seconds to ensure that all ingredients are fully combined.
Open the shaker. If the lid is stuck, try tapping the bottom of the shaker with your palm to loosen it.
Pour the Margarita into the glass.

Add the final garnish to the glass and enjoy. At this point, you can add a lime slice or attach a small umbrella to the glass. Finally, it's time to enjoy!
Making a Frozen Margarita from Scratch

Prepare the ingredients:
- 10-12 medium or large limes
- 6-8 large lemons (Western limes)
- 1.5 parts Tequila
- 1/2 part Triple Sec
- Fine salt or sugar
- Ice cubes
Make your own sweet-and-sour Bar mix. Mix 1 cup of sugar with 1 cup of warm water in a large bowl and stir until the sugar dissolves. Then add 1 cup of fresh lime juice, followed by 1 cup of fresh lemon juice.
- Alternatively, you can place both sugar and water in a jar and shake vigorously until the sugar dissolves into the water.
Prepare the glass. Use a fresh lime slice to moisten the rim of a chilled glass. Then, dip the rim into a plate of fine salt. For a sweet-salty flavor, you can also dip the rim into a mix of salt and sugar.
Pour 1.5 parts of Tequila into the blender. For a single Margarita, use 1.5 parts of Tequila.
Pour 1/2 part of Triple Sec into the blender. For a single Margarita, use 1/2 part of Triple Sec (Cointreau is the most commonly recommended type).
Add 3 parts of Bar mix to the blender. For a single Margarita, use 3 parts of Bar mix.
Add ice cubes to the blender. Add just enough ice to slightly exceed the water level. Blend until the mixture reaches a smooth consistency.
Pour into a glass and enjoy. You can garnish your glass with a lime wedge. Alternatively, add a little fresh lime juice (or simply squeeze fresh lime directly into the glass) before drinking.
Make Frozen Lime Margarita

Prepare a container that holds up to 1900 ml of liquid. Ensure the container has a tight-fitting lid and fits in the freezer.
- This recipe is based on using a 180 ml Limeade container. If using a 360 ml container, you can still use this ratio, but you should reduce the ingredient quantities by half. Otherwise, you’ll end up with 3800 ml of Margarita.
Mix the ingredients in the container. Use an empty Limeade container to measure out the other ingredients (using the box as the measurement unit). Add the following to the container:
- 2 boxes of frozen Limeade concentrate
- 6 boxes of water
- 2 boxes of Tequila
- 1 box of Triple Sec
Wait for the mixture to reach a smooth texture. This can take over 4 hours. You can store the mixture in the freezer overnight; the alcohol will keep the mixture soft without freezing solid.
Prepare the glass. Before pouring your drink, prepare the glass by moistening the rim with lime juice, then dip the glass rim into a plate of salt.
Take the mixture out of the freezer. Remove the container from the freezer. If the lid is too tight, shake it vigorously to loosen the ice block and ensure the ingredients are well-mixed.
- If you can’t securely close the lid to shake, you can open it, place it on the counter, and use a whisk to stir the mixture.
Scoop the cocktail into a glass. This recipe yields about 1900 ml of cocktail, equivalent to 8-12 servings of Margarita, depending on the size of your glass.
Try making a cocktail with Corona beer as a substitute.

Prepare the ingredients:
- 1/2-3/4 cup of light beer (Corona is the ideal choice)
- 1 cup of gold Tequila (avoid using white tequila with beer)
- Triple Sec for added flavor (the sweeter, the better)
- Juice from 1/4-1/2 lime
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- Sparkling water
- Crushed ice
Prepare the glass. Use a fresh lime wedge to moisten the rim of a chilled glass. Afterward, dip the moistened glass into a plate of salt or finely ground sugar.
- Note that this recipe yields at least 2 cocktail servings.
Place Tequila, Triple Sec, lime juice, and sugar into a cocktail shaker. Stir the mixture and let it sit for about 30 minutes to allow the sugar to dissolve into the liquid.
- Depending on your taste, you can adjust the amount of Triple Sec (if using). Try starting with 1/2 cup of Triple Sec.
Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously. Fill the shaker with ice up to 2/3-3/4 full, secure the lid, and shake vigorously for at least 15 seconds.
Pour the shaken mixture into the glass. Once the ingredients are well-mixed, open the shaker and pour the mixture into the glass that has been rimmed with salt and chilled.
Pour the beer into the glass. Add 1/2-3/4 cup of beer to the glass. Start by adding 1/2 cup, then taste it before adding more, if desired.
Stir well and enjoy. Mix the ingredients thoroughly, then taste it. Adjust to your liking and stir well.
- At this point, you can add sparkling water to the cocktail to create a fizzy effect.
Add crushed ice to the drink, stir well, and enjoy. Once you're happy with the flavor, you can add some crushed ice, stir again, and enjoy your drink.
Choosing the best ingredients

Know how to choose good Tequila. The best Tequila is made from 100% Agave plants. Tequila that isn't made from 100% Agave might contain corn syrup, sugar, spices, and artificial colors. A high-quality Tequila will indicate on the label that it is made from 100% Agave.

Know how to choose Triple Sec. Triple Sec typically has an alcohol content ranging from 15% to 40%. For a stronger Margarita, opt for a high-proof Triple Sec like Cointreau (40% alc/vol, meaning 400 ml of alcohol per 1000 ml).
- There are various Triple Sec brands, with popular ones including Curacao, Grand Marnier (which is actually a Cognac-based orange liqueur), and Cointreau.
- If you'd prefer a simpler Margarita, you can skip the Triple Sec altogether.

Select the perfect yellow lemon. Ripe yellow lemons have thin, glossy skin and a soft texture; when you rub the lemon, it will release a faint aroma.
- For an authentic Mexican flavor, it's best to use Mexican lemons or West Indian limes, which are more tart and bitter compared to Persian limes.
- Alternatively, you can use fresh lime juice (try using sweet Meyer lemons) for a milder taste.

Use high-quality sweeteners. Common sweeteners used to make a Margarita include Agave syrup (available at health food stores if not found at regular grocery stores), simple syrup, and honey.
- You can make simple syrup at home by mixing water and sugar in a jar, then shaking it well or heating the mixture in a pan until the sugar dissolves. Depending on your taste, you can mix 1.5-2 parts sugar to 1 part water.
- Sweeteners aren't strictly necessary. Some people skip the sweetener altogether, letting the orange liqueur naturally sweeten the drink.

Use large ice cubes. Unless you're making a frozen Margarita, it's better to use large ice cubes (like the ones used for shaking in a cocktail shaker). Large ice cubes don't melt as quickly as crushed ice or small cubes, so the cocktail remains stronger and tastier for longer.

Choose high-quality salt for rimming the glass. Sea salt and table salt are the most recommended for rimming the edges of the glass. Table salt will provide a slightly saltier flavor than sea salt.
- Avoid using refined salt as it can cause clumps of fine salt crystals to stick to the glass, making the drink too salty.
- You can also purchase pre-made salt blends specifically designed for rimming Margarita glasses at food stores or liquor shops.
Rim the glass with salt.
