Noodles are a delicious dish. For many, they are even more enjoyable than rice. We all know that noodles pair perfectly with a variety of rich, flavorful sauces, providing a delightful chewiness in soups, and can even be added to salads. To ensure every noodle dish is tasty, this guide will show you how to prepare noodles with just the right balance of tenderness and chewiness. What could be better than a dish that is both versatile and easy to prepare?
Ingredients- 1 package of dry noodles (450g)
- 4-6 liters of water
- Salt, to taste
Serves: 8 portions
- 2 cups (170g) dry noodles
- 600-650ml milk
- ¼ cup (60ml) water
Serves: 3-4 portions
Microwave-Cooked Noodles
- ½ to 1 cup (40-85g) dry noodles
- Water
Serves: 1-2 portions
StepsBoiled Noodles

Boil 4-6 liters of salted water. Fill a large pot with water and add a few pinches of salt. Cover the pot and set the stove to high heat. Bring the water to a boil, and when you see steam escaping from under the lid, it’s ready.
- For a single serving, use 2-2.5 liters of water and reduce the amount of noodles to about ½ to 1 cup (40-85g).
Add 1 package (450g) of dry noodles to the water. Stir with a spoon to prevent the noodles from sticking together while cooking.
- The water will stop boiling once you add the noodles.
Bring the water back to a boil and cook the noodles for about 7-8 minutes. Open the pot lid and cook the noodles over high heat. By this time, the water should be boiling vigorously. Stir the noodles occasionally and cook them until they are tender but still firm. This usually takes about 7 minutes. If you prefer softer noodles, cook them for an additional minute.
Drain the noodles. Turn off the heat and place a strainer in the sink. Carefully pour the noodles into the strainer to let the water drain out. Serve the noodles while still hot.
- If you want to prepare the noodles in advance, place them in a sealed container and store in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Reheat the noodles with sauce or in a casserole dish.
Milk-Cooked Noodles
Mix the milk with water. Measure out 2.5 cups (590ml) of milk and ¼ cup (60ml) of water, then pour them into a large pot on the stove.
- For a single serving, reduce the amounts of milk, water, and noodles by half.
- You can use low-fat milk in this recipe, but whole milk will give the noodles a richer flavor.
Boil the liquid ingredients over medium heat. Do not cover the pot and bring the milk-water mixture to a vigorous boil.
- Avoid boiling the liquid on high heat, as the milk will burn at the bottom of the pot.
Reduce the heat and stir in the pasta. Lower the stove to a small flame and add 2 cups (170g) of pasta.
Simmer the pasta over low heat for about 20 minutes. Keep the pot uncovered and cook the pasta mixture gently until the pasta reaches the desired softness. Stir the pasta every few minutes to prevent it from sticking or burning.
- If the liquid seems to evaporate, add ¼ cup (60ml) of milk when the liquid level decreases.
Strain the pasta. You can choose to keep the hot milk from the recipe or discard it. If you want to keep the milk, place a large bowl in the sink and position a sieve or colander on top. If you prefer to discard the milk, you can skip placing the bowl under the colander. Carefully pour the cooked pasta into the colander.
Serve the prepared pasta. Enjoy the pasta while it’s still hot, or place it in an airtight container. Store the pasta in the refrigerator and use it within 3 or 4 days.
- If you prefer hot milk, try thickening the milk with roux sauce and stir in some grated cheese. Mix the pasta with this simple cheese sauce to quickly make a cheesy pasta dish.
Microwave Pasta Preparation
Place the pasta in a large bowl and add water. Measure out half a cup to one cup (40-85g) of dry pasta and put it into a microwave-safe bowl. Add enough water to the bowl so that it covers the pasta by about 5 cm.
- The pasta will absorb water as it cooks, so it’s essential to use a large bowl to accommodate the expanded pasta.
- This quantity of ingredients makes 1-2 servings. If you want to double the portion, use a larger bowl and increase the water accordingly.
Place the bowl on a plate and microwave. Put a microwave-safe plate underneath the bowl to catch any potential overflow of water. Place both the plate and bowl into the microwave.
Cook the pasta in the microwave for about 11-12 minutes. Start the microwave and cook until the water boils and the pasta softens. After the cooking time ends, check if the pasta has reached your desired softness.
- If you prefer softer pasta, microwave it for an additional 1-2 minutes.
Strain the pasta. Place a colander or sieve in the sink. Wear kitchen gloves to carefully remove the bowl from the microwave. Pour the pasta and water into the colander to allow the water to drain away.
Use the cooked pasta. Add the pasta to your favorite sauce or soup. For any leftover pasta, store it in an airtight container and refrigerate for about 3-4 days.
Using cooked pasta
Make a macaroni and cheese dish. Melt butter with flour in a small pot to create a thick mixture. Stir in milk and butter to make a creamy white sauce. Add your favorite shredded cheese and mix in the cooked pasta.
- You can enjoy the macaroni and cheese right away, or place it in a baking dish and bake until it bubbles up.
Make a baked casserole. Combine cooked pasta with shredded chicken, diced ham, or canned tuna. Add diced vegetables and your favorite seasonings. Stir in canned soup, pasta sauce, or beaten eggs to bind the casserole together, then transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish. Bake until the casserole is golden and bubbly.
Make a cold pasta salad. Chill the cooked pasta and toss it with salad dressing. Add crunchy diced vegetables, shredded cheese, and boiled eggs or cooked meat. Refrigerate the pasta salad for a few hours before serving.
Pour pasta sauce over the noodles. For a quick meal, simply heat your favorite pasta sauce, such as marinara or alfredo, then drizzle it over the cooked noodles and sprinkle with shredded Parmesan cheese.
- You can also add cooked ground beef, grilled shrimp, or meatballs.
Complete the dish.
Tip- Depending on the recipe, you can directly add dry noodles to soup or casserole. The noodles will cook as you simmer the soup or bake the casserole.
