Aloe vera gel, also known as aloe gel, is a natural substance commonly used worldwide for various purposes, such as treating sunburn, making face masks, and as a food ingredient. Fresh aloe vera gel, harvested directly from the plant, provides the best results. However, after harvesting, it needs to be properly stored. To maximize its shelf life, freshly harvested aloe vera gel is typically preserved using three main methods: freezing, mixing with honey, or mixing with vitamin C.
Steps
Freezing Aloe Vera Gel

Prepare an ice cube tray to freeze aloe vera gel. Freezing the gel in an ice cube tray instead of a large container will allow you to easily take out individual cubes whenever needed.
- It is recommended to use a silicone ice cube tray, as it will allow you to easily flip the tray to remove the cubes.
- If you don't have an ice cube tray, you can also freeze the gel in small plastic containers.

Pour the aloe vera gel into the tray and place it in the freezer. Once you’ve poured the gel into the tray, you can immediately start freezing it. Be sure to place the tray on a flat surface to avoid spilling the gel.

Let the aloe vera gel freeze overnight. Allowing it to freeze overnight gives the gel ample time to solidify. The gel cubes need to be completely frozen before storing, so ensure they remain in the freezer for a sufficient amount of time.
Transfer the frozen aloe vera cubes into a resealable plastic bag and label it with the date. You can store the gel cubes in the freezer for up to a year. Keeping them in a plastic bag makes it easy to retrieve the cubes when needed. The frozen aloe vera cubes can be used for:
- Sunburn relief
- Homemade soap
- Aloe vera smoothies
- Hair conditioning gel
Mixing Aloe Vera Gel with Honey
Pour the aloe vera gel into a plastic container. You will need a sufficiently large container to mix in the honey.
- A smaller plastic container can be used if it’s more convenient for storage.
- Make sure to use a container with a lid to protect the gel from harmful contaminants.
Mix honey into the aloe vera gel at a 1:1 ratio. Due to its low water content and high natural sugar levels, honey helps preserve the aloe vera gel for a longer period.
- This method is similar to how we preserve fruits in syrup or jam form.
- High-quality honey, free from preservatives, will ensure the aloe vera gel stays fresh for as long as possible.

Store the aloe vera and honey mixture in the refrigerator or at room temperature for up to 8 months. Avoid direct sunlight exposure. When using the mixture, you can combine it with a variety of other products, such as:
- Exfoliating cream
- Body wash
- Hair care products
Mixing Aloe Vera Gel with Vitamin C
Place the aloe vera gel in a blender, but don’t blend it just yet. Pure aloe vera gel is somewhat thick, so it can be a bit challenging to work with.
- Blending the gel will make it smoother and thinner, making it easier to use.
Add crushed vitamin C tablets. For every ¼ cup (60ml) of aloe vera gel, add 500 mg of vitamin C. By adding vitamin C, the aloe vera gel can be preserved in the refrigerator for about 8 months.
- You can purchase vitamin C at pharmacies or supermarkets.
Blend the mixture in a blender for a while. This will help thoroughly combine the vitamin C with the aloe vera gel, making the mixture smoother and thinner. Once blended, you will have aloe vera juice.
- Aloe vera juice is much smoother and more liquid than the original aloe vera gel.
Pour the aloe vera juice into a plastic container with a lid. You’ll notice a layer of foam on top, but don’t worry, it will disappear after a few days.

Store the aloe vera juice in the refrigerator. At this point, you can either use it immediately or keep it stored for up to a month.
- You can drink the aloe vera juice on its own, or mix it with fruit juices, smoothies, and teas for a refreshing taste.
- The aloe vera juice can also be used for moisturizing, bathing, and hair care treatments.
Warning
- If you’re extracting aloe vera gel directly from the leaf, be sure to cut a thin slice at the base of the leaf, then stand the aloe vera leaf upright in water for a while to let the aloin drain out.
- Aloin is a potent laxative, and if not removed, it may cause adverse effects for people consuming aloe vera products.
